P.E. Required for Athletes?
Every year thousands of athletes ask themselves, “why do I have to take P.E. if I play sports? I am one of these athletes and I ask the same question to myself every day. I believe that all athletes should receive a last period study hall class, because we need more time for school work and PE wastes our energy for practices and games after school.
Many kids that play sports play benefit their future by either going to college or playing professionally and without grades they’re not going to be able to exceed their talents outside of high school. To solve this issue we can replace our P.E. course to an athletic study hall for all studentathletes who play 23 sports that the school offers, each year. JoJo Starbuck Gertler, parent of two athletes at Madison High School, NJ agrees and says, “it would benefit them and all studentathletes if they were able to take a study hall instead of physical education classes.” and also says, "Those involved don't need the benefits of gym. They do need any precious time for homework." Without grades, us athletes are not able to play due to our ineligibility to reach the GPA that the athletes need to reach, but if we remove P.E. and add a study hall we can complete our school work and and be able to reach the GPA requirement to play.
Everyday that I do have P.E., I have to be careful on not over doing myself while we’re doing activity so I won’t be tired for practices or games after school. Athlete from
Stamford, CT speaks on the same issue, “During my sports seasons in the fall and spring, I
Garcia 2 don’t put in my hardest effort during physical education because I know that if I waste my energy running around playing kickball, soccer, etc., I won’t be able to give my best during my long, intense practices after school.” If we waste all of our energy on P.E. then we can’t perform our best in our school practices and
