First Day Of Marching Band
Band Camp

This is the story of my first day of marching band. I was 15 and it was July 20. I was one of about 40 to 50 freshmen in the marching band. I had been waiting all year for the opportunity to join the marching band. I will cover 4 major areas of the day. First, how the day started. Second, when we hit the pavement to start learning. Then, going through the first part of the show for the first time. And finally, the end of the day. When I first woke up that morning I was extremely nervous about being in the marching band. About an hour and a half before we were going to start I forgot to buy sunscreen and had to go buy some at Walgreens. After that I went to the school, it was about 45 minutes before practice. When I got in the band room I found my assigned seat. I was

When we got out their they had us lie on the pavement and do core exercises when the pavement was scorching hot. We then moved on to the fun of learning how to march forward, backward, and left to right. That was about an hour to two hours of our eight hour day. We then took a popsicle/water break for the staff to hand out drill cards. When everyone finally had one Mr. Ames then explained how to read them. We went back onto the pavement to learn where our drill spots were and how to move from one to the next. We did this for the next three hours and then went inside for music rehearsal. We broke off into brass, woodwinds, and percussion. We did the strangest thing, the brass instructor told us to lie on the floor and we had to work on our breathing and we did this until dinner. After that it was time for our hour dinner. When we were dismissed for dinner we would line the band halls and eat the food we had brought in. Most of the sections would eat together and the play games after they had finished. After the hour was done they called us all into a mass music practice and did that for the next 45 minutes. We then went back

The class is put to test physical on the first hour that they arrive, this includes multiple pushups, runs, and all the while they have their instructors spraying them with a water hose. The instructors try their best to get the trainees as tired as possible to find the weakest link. The cadets quickly learn that details are extremely important, if they mess up on one thing, even the simplest thing, then…

I am writing concerning Tripp Moore, whom I have come to know throughout my years as the Flomaton High School “Hurricane” Marching Band drumline instructor. As Tripp’s instructor, it was a pleasure to get to know him. Tripp has been a great student of mine and it has been my pleasure of being able to teach him. He has some great qualities of a human being and qualities that you would love to see in a leader. Tripp’s hard work and his dedication to music helped him as he joined band and made awesome strides to be on the best percussionist. Tripp also dedicates his time to being a part of the Flomaton High School Jazz Band, and being the drummer at his church First Baptist Church of Flomaton, Alabama. Tripp will one day be a great leader in his…

At exactly 6pm the bell was rung which signaled to everyone that dinner was now ready. We all piled in to eat an assortment of chicken, rice, vegetables, and salad. After dinner a bunch of the girls, including myself, sat on the dock letting our feet dangle down by the water and sharing stories trying to get to know one another better. I was surprised to find that a lot of us actually had a lot more in common, other than being in the honors program, then I would of imagined. Later on that night we all gathered around a camp fire enjoying our smore's and anticipating what the next day had in store for us.…

Sweat drizzles down my skin as it exits my pores trying to cool my heated body. The blood rushes through my veins pumping blood with the consistent pounding of my heart. Every breath, every second, every action, every thought; I am standing where everything counts. Artificial turf and grass crumpled beneath my torn black shoes and the thick silence only cut by the timed chants from afar. This is the last moment I will stand here for this reason. This is the last moment I will stand here with my family. This is the last moment of my marching band career. Many will say that this was a special group of kids, others will say that this year was a show that was made to make it. I, on the other hand, will say that this was because of seven years of dedication.…

I couldn't imagine how different my life would be without marching band. Actually, I might be able to. I would be friendless, insecure, unable to lead, and left with few high school memories. I remember when my band went to Kings Island for their "Trills and Thrills" competition. Just as we were about to go home it began to downpour. Everyone was completely soaked, one kid vomited so we had to put down the windows on the bus, we were all freezing cold and ended up getting sick, but it's something I will always laugh about. I can also recall going to the University of Cincinnati Band Day and learning new games with the other bands and then when my reed broke just as we were about to walk out onto the field and I cried and cried. No matter how bad that moment was, I will always remember it. Those were the best moments of my high school life because they were spent with some of the people I love…

Everyone in the band had one similar goal; to produce an excellent, if not, perfect marching show. Our band rehearsed the marching show day and night, sacrificing our prized hours to create a clean and entertaining show for audiences to enjoy. Water breaks were a blessing, conversations were a sin of the marching world, and mess-ups were lessons of resilience. Our band director made sure the idea of efficiency was planted…

Marching band and concert band have two completely different concepts. However, many high school students consider the word band as being able to play some kind of musical instrument. Being a five year marching band member and playing in concert band for seven years, I feel as if I know the difference between these two activities. One of the main differences between marching and concert band is the mental process one must go through to memorize the music and the steps on the field. Obviously marching band is much more physical than concert band, and the adrenalin one gets before competing is extraordinarily different. Another noticeable difference is the marching band is under the direction of a student drum major and not the actual band director who conducts all concert band activities. Personally, I do not understand why the students at my high school did not know the difference between marching and concert band. In my opinion, the difference is very clear.…

I was fourteen years old just starting my new chapter of life at Hamilton High School. I did not really know what to expect from high school but the year started great. I was having fun in my classes and made some great friends. However, I was nervous about the Varsity Golf team tryout. I played golf for about a year leading up to the tryout not knowing what to expect. I felt like I had a really great chance of making the team and join a varsity team at Hamilton.…

During my junior year I was the section leader for the Alto Saxophones, and I went on to become drum major the next year. I attended a drum major camp to learn how to correctly and efficiently lead the band. Along with the help of the section leaders and the other drum major, we lead the band to learn more sets and music than we had ever done in the past. By the end the that performance at the SVVSD Band Night we had practiced the non-stop eight minutes of music more than some would have liked to. No matter how well we performed, I was happy to have seen the band come so far since the beginning. The band has given me so much since my first day of camp freshmen year. I have come out of my shell, and found peace from everyday stress as well as a new family to rely on. When I joined the band after that last performance, I was so grateful for the opportunity to have been drum major and I knew that we were…

When I first started marching band during the summer going into my freshman year, I didn’t expect to fall in love with it. Freshmen percussionists at my high school are required to be in the front ensemble their first year and couldn’t be in the drumline until their sophomore year. Knowing this, I thought of the upcoming marching season as just a waste of time because I wanted to be in the drumline and I would never want to stay in the front ensemble beyond my freshmen year. Although I wasn’t expecting much, I was still hopeful going into the first day of summer band.…

Ring Ring, we herd the phone and my mom answered, I could not hear what they were talking about but it just so happened to one of they most important phone calls of my life. It was December 10, 2014 that we got the phone call from a band asking me if I was interested in playing with there band at a live concert, first I though I was dreaming and then I realized I was'nt, I could not believe that I had the opportunity to play in a band at a concert at age 12. I had five days to make up my mind of weather or not to play on stage with this bad. I started practicing the songs I was going to perform and they were pretty easy for me but I just had this gut feeling like I was not going to do well. The next day I woke up it was coming so fast, and all I was focused on at the time was practice, practice, practice. This would be a once in a lifetime chance, a decision that would decide my future as a musician, it would decide respect, how people…

One day at school in fourth grade my teacher passed a yellow piece of paper out to everyone in the class. It was a 4H paper, I filled it out and tried to persuade my mom into letting me join. For two years I tried to get in, but we didn't have time. My little brother and sister were too young. Finally we filled the paper out and sent it in. We got a letter in the mail about what club we were in and when the dates and times were. I was so happy and ready to see what it was like.…

As I tell the story, why this is my crucible will become very clear. Being in the high school band is something I take pride in. My first year being involved with the high school band was in 8th grade. That was my first year marching with the high school. This was also the year I learned the pithy, “To be on time is to be late, to be early is to be on time.”…
