Freshman Music Education
As a Freshman Music Education major here at the University of Alabama, the National Association for Music Education(NAfME) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) seemed like appropriate topics of study for this project considering my future job opportunities. I do not really know where I would like to teach, so choosing National organizations would be better so I have more options.
According to the “About Us” page on their website, The American Federation of Teachers is “a union of professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities” (American Federation of Teachers, About Us, 2017, para. 1). NAfME “advocates at the local, state, and national levels; provides resources for teachers, parents, and administrators; hosts professional development events; and offers a variety of opportunities for students and teachers. The Association orchestrates success for millions of students nationwide and has supported music educators at all teaching levels for more than a century” (National Association for Music Education, About Us, 2017, para. 1). Founded in 1907, this organization ensures the highest quality instruction for its students through professional and qualified teachers. Due to NAfME’s efforts and resources, music education is considered a valid profession by society and the government. They actively advocate for the promotion and guidance of music as a crucial part of the school curriculum. They also are responsible for the establishment for the National Standards for Arts …show more content…

My Introduction to Music Education class, MUE 200, required me to join the collegiate chapter here at the University of Alabama. But I do believe that it would be incredibly beneficial for me to join NAfME when I go out into the workforce, as it would connect me with a number of professionals who share the same specific teaching subject as me. It would also be beneficial to be connected to people who understand the specific stressors and issues of Music Education. And like the AFT, NAfME is a national organization, so it would not matter which state I worked in if I wanted to be a

Applying organizations have to have a successful 2 year history and must have at least one professional on staff. It takes a good deal of organizational and community planning to meet these requirements. A music staff committee is essential, as they have the capacity to plan and offer private instruction for interested music students. This committee would be under the direction of a full time professional instructor and administrator. Budget requirements would also have to be taken into account in the planning process. Line items for the budget would include performance space costs, visiting artist and guest instructor accommodations, advertising costs for scheduled events, building utilities and payroll for any part time or full time staff. Program evaluation…

The Academy for Science & Foreign Languages (ASFL) Music Department has two distinct music education programs: beginning band and mixed choral. Mr. Jonathan Snodgrass, music teacher, has generously shared his 7th grade beginning band classroom course syllabus with our EDU622 AIU select small group. This band holds rehearsals daily and invites all interested students in the school to an open opportunity to play in the band. Typically, students will participate in 3 – 4 concerts per year, in addition to, 2 – 3 individual and concert band competitions per year.…

Prior to reading the first chapter of the textbook The Musical Classroom, I had never thought of when and how music came to be a school subject. Of course, in elementary school I went to music class learned about the different composers and how to create sheets of it, but I did not learn about this man, Lowell Mason. After starting some research on Lowell I was surprised to find that I already knew many of his creations.…

I believe teaching individuals about singing, playing instruments, moving, composing and listening is incredibly important, ranging from infants through to adults, but starting in early childhood would be most beneficial for long term benefits. These key elements contribute significantly in developing their music skills and knowledge; contributing to their education on a more broad scale (Broad, 2007 pg23); and/or assisting the student’s emotional/mental development.…

Every one has been exposed to music either while listening to the radio, attending a concert, or hearing a catchy commercial jingle. This is due to the pure fact music is all around us. Music is in our cars, televisions, and sometimes stuck in our heads. Music education should be a required class through the first year of Middle School because it establishes discipline, creates confidence in ones self, and it helps improve grades in school.…

    Marching Band In Schools

Music is a universal language and the greatest of the arts. It can challenge the listener’s emotions and can powerfully affect human character and behavior (Doctrine of Ethos). Music education is more than a field of study associated with the teaching and learning of music. Music embodies the core subjects of education. It is well-rounded, includes active learning, and indorses motivation and student engagement. The most popular ensemble of music, in my option, is the marching band. Marching band at any institution should stimulate a school or campus wide spirit (pride) as the musical representation of the institution, promote musicianship, and develop leaders while striving for the highest academically.…

Music education is a part of making a human more intelligent. According to Turben.com, “At the state level, only 23 states have enacted graduation requirements that in some way involve music and the other arts”. I would like to be a music educator, either a school teacher or a private instructor. I became interested when I found that I enjoyed teaching others about music. In my research paper I am describing the requirements to get a music education job, and then what they do on the job. For my project I am leading a group of middle school students in a clarinet choir and I hope to be able to improve the student’s playing ability in a smaller group setting. I would be demonstrating…

    Jazz Application Essay

As section leader of the clarinets at Mukwonago High School’s top band ensemble, I am expected to guide my section to success. I lead sectionals and help the other clarinet players with high notes and intricate rhythms. We go over how our parts connect with each others and how they connect with other sections in the ensemble. Aiding younger members of my section helps both me and them to grow musically. I also help lead our jazz combo at school. In a team effort, we express our ideas on phrasing and how we can evoke emotion through the notes and rhythms to the audience. When we share our thoughts and ideas with each other, we promote a friendly and accepting atmosphere that we then take to our other classes. In our marching band I may not be section leader, but I lead by example as one of the strongest mellophone players. By memorizing my music and executing my location in our formations, I set myself and those around me up for success. With all of this teaching and performing experience, I am ready to move on to…

This past spring break, I spent a lot of time at Uniontown Area High School. I played piano for their spring musical, so I was there everyday after school in preparation for the upcoming performances. One day I was catching up with my former band director when we eventually got on the topic of classes and assignments, which led to her mentioning that she had been leading the special education class in musical activities a few days out of the week and she invited me to come observe. The very next day I was sitting in the band room once again, but this time with 2 special education teachers and a dozen teenagers with different disabilities. The person that I selected to observe closely for this assignment, who we’ll call Paul, was a 17-year-old boy with Down syndrome. Paul’s appearance seemed pretty typical of those with the disability. He had a very short, thick neck, which was in contrast to the rest of his slender body with short arms and legs. His facial features were kind of flat with narrow eye slits, but he had an undeniably charming smile. One thing that stood out to me that we discussed in class was that he had a single transverse palmer crease.…

I have no idea where I would be without having learned life lessons through music in this band program. I would highly encourage students participating in middle school band to continue it in high school. Middle school band is nothing compared to the passion and warmth they would feel in being a part of such a greatly united group of individuals like a high school band. If one would be able to have the opportunity to be in the high school band, I would encourage them to do so. After attending it for at least a year, they would immediately see a change. High schoolers are more passionate, and caring for the world of music and that makes such a drastic difference between the two schools. I have learned that being united in such a way like band, we are all required for excellence. In the first half of the year, with football season, marching band is the best. When someone in our band is absent, their spot in the marching show is a hole, which causes holes in the pictures we create. It causes that section of the band to be one person less. Being a part of the marching band has caused a need for time and scheduling management. We need to learn of important dates, such as football games, along with other…
