The buzzer echoes through the brightly lit building. A girl named Mackenzie is standing behind the block staring at the water lost in thought. She cannot stop focusing on all the negative things that might happen during her race. Little does she know that those will affect the outcome of her race. The mind controls everything: from walking, talking, and thinking. Swimming is sport where an athlete’s mindset will determine the outcome of their performance. Without mental strength athletes cannot perform to the best of their ability. Training hard makes swimmers competitive, but they must have a mental strength to achieve greatness.

A person always needs a goal to keep them going. Because without a goal a person will never have anything to strive for and will lose their determination. Coach Zack Knudsen always says that in order to reach you goal you have to be hungry and if a person isn’t hungry enough for it they will never reach it. The wall will tower in a person’s mind and a person will think that they are mentally though enough to push it down or reach the other side but most of the time you over estimate and they cannot. Every single day is it has to be on a person’s mind you have to want to get over that wall in order to see the other side. In order to overcome this layer a person has to displace themselves in order to stay determined to reach their goal. It doesn’t matter how hard you train or how much you train. If a swimmer go to practice and just go through the motions and never think about what they are doing a person will never reach their goal. If a swimmer never works their brain muscle at practice and just work out your body muscle will never be a well-rounded swimmer.
