Ethical Actions Worksheet

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions:

• Was there anything in either the University of Phoenix Student Code of Conduct or the Student Code of Academic Integrity that surprised you? If so, what was it? Why were you surprised? If not, why not?

After reading the University of Phoenix Student Code of Conduct, like expected, I did not find any of the information contained within to be surprising. Like in any professional and sometimes even public settings, I expected nothing less from the University of Phoenix’ own Code of Conduct. The University of Phoenix Code of Conduct reflects that of many of the abovementioned settings in order to ensure an environment where when followed; the rules help ensure a positive learning and work environment where each and every individual can focus only on the tasks at hand, leaving behind any personal issues derived from unprofessionalism.

• What did you learn about the behaviors considered important for an ethical learner or student in the University of Phoenix learning community?

I learned that in order to ensure a more positive learning environment, it is important for students who are enrolled at the University of Phoenix to always take into consideration whether or not their actions may be found offensive by other students. One must always keep in mind that what may not be found to be offensive by one individual, may offend another individual regardless of the similarities between the two. This is due to the various backgrounds and personal beliefs of students enrolled at the University of Phoenix. For example, one person of a particular racial background may find humor in a racial joke while another person of the same racial background may find the same joke to be offensive.

    Most people think that moral issues are a matter of “right vs. wrong” because people have their beliefs which make them think they are right. The problem with moral issues is there is no right or wrong because both sides usually have valid arguments but it depends on the side a person is taking. Polarizing values is the way a person sees things. People polarize values based on how they were raised and the different things they were taught to believe in. This could depend on a political party, a relgiion or just a belief that they learned growing up.     One thing that I greatly appreciated, when I was deciding which univeristy to attend, was how well Texas A&M expressed the Aggie Code of Honor. "Aggies do not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do." A very simple saying, but one that is heard and seen all around campus. It is tied to the university as much as the word "Howdy". It is great that this motto of academic integrity is already stiched to Texas A&M because its easier for professors and the university to promote academic integrity.
