"Sex Tricks He 's Never Seen Before," or the infamous, "Sex - 10 Make Him Throb Moves..." Sound familiar? I wouldn 't be surprised. Cosmopolitan 's provocative headlines are ones that catch everybody 's eye while in line at the supermarket. This notorious magazine has been gracing newsstands since 1886. Surprisingly, the magazine itself hasn 't changed a bit, aside from the old-fashion hair-styles. The covers still feature the stereotypical model, with blonde hair, blue-eyes, and much slimmer than the average woman. Cosmo offers editorials on how to attain confidence and self-acceptance, and displays advertisements for perfect skin, perfect clothing, and perfect bodies. The magazine delivers these things; however, the ads feature mainly white women in their twenties and thirties promoting the need to attain flawless beauty. Along …show more content…
Of the 268 pages in one issue of Cosmo, only about 133 feature articles or other written text. Most of the advertisements in the magazine feature white models. When women of color are shown, they are usually light-skinned. Most of the women in the ads are flawlessly beautiful, with little or no wrinkles, perfect teeth and hair, and waistlines that are well below that of the average woman. If their clothes are visible, the women are usually dressed in a sexually appealing manner. These advertisements in addition to the other content in the magazine send the message that the 'norm ' is to be sexy, flawless and thin. In order to become the 'norm ', the reader is led to believe that she needs to purchase the next new product being advertised. Most of the advertisements in Cosmo are for beauty products. The ads range from St. Ives Apricot Cleanser to the more expensive Sephora Micro-Nutrient Face & Body Natural Protein Tan. No matter what the price of the product is, the message that it sends readers is that their natural beauty is not

    Susan Bordo describes the ways men can alter an advertisement, and how the way they dress and behave in the advertisement can change the perception of them. Some advertisements that centers around men are used for the sole purpose of exuding sex appeal. Campaigns advertising products such as cologne and fashion use this approach abundantly, mainly to get people’s attention. When men are illustrated this way, it is much more controversial because men are perceived more in a feminine way. As Susan Bordo states, “It is feminine to be on display” (Bordo, 135). Males exuding femininity is not completely accepted in today’s culture because of the stereotype that men should be authoritative and burly men.     Women were overrepresented in advertisements for cosmetics and were less likely to appear in advertisements for cars, trucks and related products. Seventy-five percent of all advertisements using women were for products found in the kitchen or bathroom, reinforcing the stereotype that a woman’s place is in the home. Women as compared to men were portrayed mostly in house settings rather than business settings. Women did not make important decisions and lastly women were depicted as dependent on men and were regarded primarily as sexual objects. Courtney and Whipple (1974) defined sexual objects as, where women had no role in the commercial, but appeared as an item of decoration. Jake Lake and Brad Wadden say, in the portrayal of women in the media that advertisements promote extreme thinness or a thin waist and big breasts, misleading because these models don’t represent the majority of the population. These advertisements have women in them looking good but very seldom are they talking. These advertisements put pressure on women to get that “thin look”. This extra pressure leads to low self-esteem and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Women are also portrayed as domestic laborers.
