The possibility of genetically modifying foods to provide more nutrients is a wonderful idea because of the benefits it could ensue. An example of this claim is golden rice. Golden rice is a genetically modified species of rice that is rich in vitamin A.
Vitamin A benefits a person's body in a number of ways such as; vision, immune system, reproduction, heart, lungs, and kidneys. It provides nutrients to all of these organs which are necessary to sustaining a human's life. Other vitamins could be enhanced or even added to certain foods to prolong the lives of a certain population or to provide nutrients to certain people who lack them. Some people say that adding nutrients to foods could present new diseases to society which could possibly wipe out a population. New diseases is not a new problem that society faces and has not overcome. Modifying foods could supply certain populations that are lacking nutrients the vitamins and minerals they need to prolong their life and increase their ability to fend off sicknesses and diseases.
Another benefit of genetically modifying foods is that it would yield more of a crop and provide food to many people who are starving. Multiple studies have been done to prove that genetically modified foods yield more of a crop and provide more food to more consumers with little to no negative effects. People argue that genetically modifying foods may arouse allergies to people who are allergic to foods that could be used in engineered foods. Although certain genes are added to foods it is proven that the change is so slight that it would not affect a person's allergies. Modifying foods could make foods resistant to certain pesticides which could allow more crops to be produced which would allow more people to be fed.
Modifying foods can be beneficial to society because it could solve the problems we face when producing food and ingredients. Issues such as certain people not receiving enough nutrients from their every day diet or the issue that many people in the world go without food every day. Genetically modified foods could benefit our society more than it would hurt our society which would bring the world one step closer to becoming a better place.
