He was born into a Brahmin family and grew up amongst them. Brahmins, by definition, are a sect in Hinduism who are known for being priests and religious teachers. Siddhartha was not satisfied with the Brahmanist principles, but was in search of a higher degree of salvation. According to Siddhartha, he “was seeking Atman... seeking Brahman” and “ was determined to... reach, the Atman, the life, the divine principle, the ultimate” (76). This implies his search for divine salvation. Siddhartha doesn’t condone the belief of atheism. Rather, he believes one should introspect oneself to attain Nirvana. Siddhartha also undergoes a personal divine experience. When he was contemplating suicide “he heard a sound...the holy Om...when the sound of Om reached Siddharth’s earss, his soul suddenly reawakened...he recognized...his actions” (89). Om has divine significance in Hinduism. Om is used in all prayer and is used to offer respects to God. This is one of the fundamental prayers in Hinduism.
