the Chinese. Consequently, because of the wall’s protection, many farmers stayed on their farms, and didn’t join the nomads. This mainly happened because there were no invasions from the nomads. Additionally, the emperor was able to send his soldiers to remote places in the empire with the assurance that they would stay loyal to him along with the outskirts of the empire. As seen in the northern borders of China, the brutal nomadic tribes that lived there destroyed everything in order to expand their territory. China would’ve fell victim to their raids as well, and would’ve become rubble. For all we know, if lives had not been sacrificed, and China was left vulnerable to the north, then the country of China might not exist today.
The Great Wall of China gave the Chinese peace and serenity, which let them focus on improving their society rather than enhancing their defenses.
For example, people who were supposed to be soldiers in the military could change their job and focus to something else. If these soldiers became farmers, they could create more food for the society. As a result, with more farmers, surpluses of food would have occurred and China’s wealth would increase from the population. An increase of wealth in China would mean that the Chinese could spend more time and money on improving the architecture, art, and technology in their cities. Because of the better technology, the Chinese have created inventions like the money economy and paper money. In addition, due to the inventions of the money economy and paper money, the Chinese were more efficient in buying and trading the things they needed to survive, which has affected how we live and trade today. All in all, peace and order was worth the lives of 8 million because, without China’s achievements the world might have been much different today.
Despite the protection that the Great Wall has given, eight million people died during the construction of the Great Wall of China. China was in a time of chaos, with many attacks from the north killing people. The Great Wall of China was built over 2,000 years to protect China and it’s people from the nomads in the north. Overall, 8 million people died while working on the wall, which means that 4,000 people died each year. In fact, we can assume that if the wall hadn’t been built, more than 4,000 people would’ve died in invasions that would’ve most likely come from the
north.
