Gregor's Metamorphosis: Why Does Gregor Care So Much About His Work
Why does Gregor care so much about his work? In chapter one Of “The Metamorphosis” the main character Gregor he discovers that he has morphed into an insect. Despite his appearance, Gregor mainly concerned about getting to his job as a traveling salesman rather than what his family, coworkers and customers may think. This behavior led to the question of why he feels this way about his job. I think that because of Gregos selfless and caring personality he values supporting his family who is in debt, in anyway he can. Gregors selflessness is shown when it says “Then why was [Gregor’s sister]crying? Because he wasn’t getting up and wasn’t letting the manager in; because he was in danger of losing his position, and because then his boss would
badger his parents once again with the old demands?.... Gregor was still here and wasn’t thinking at all about abandoning his family ”(10). In this quote it shows that Gregor’s biggest concern is his family's perception of him and what will happen if he loses his job. This shows that Gregor is selfless because rather than being concerned about himself he is considerate about others. Especially when in the quote Gregor's envisions the extreme situation when he wonders if his boss would badger his parents because it shows is genuine concern. Although Gregor shows concern about his family I wonder, if Gregor feels that he needs to prove himself to his family. He possibly is trying to prove himself through his action of supporting his family. Is Franz Kafka trying to communicate that one can feel alienated in their own family through Gregor’s attempt to please his family by expressing his selflessness?
