Despite any hard evidence or confirmed reports, Congress approved the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, giving President Lyndon Johnson the freedom to send troops to Vietnam. First, explain how this resolution is different from the way the Constitution allows for the United States to go to war. Then, tell me some of the actions President Johnson took once he was allowed to send troops to Vietnam. Finally, tell me whether or not you agree or disagree with giving any President the powers and freedom to send troops wherever he pleases. Back up your stance with examples (don’t just say I agree or I disagree).
The resolution is different from how the constitution allows the United States to go to war because the congress allowed President Johnson's request to take “all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression”( …show more content…
http://www.history.com/topics/vietnam-war/gulf-of-tonkin-resolution). This was different from declaring war, as the congress is allowed to do, article 1 section 8 “ To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water”( http://www.heritage.org/constitution/articles/1/legislative ).Once President Johnson was allowed to send troops over to Vietnam he, started bombing north Vietnam and began a war bringing U.S. Combat troops into Vietnam to battle which made the war last for almost eight years. I do not agree with the way President Johnson handled things, by his actions once he was allowed to send troops, he started a war we did not need. He bombed north Vietnam, and continuously sent troops to fight, while starting to draft men to make up more troops to send over.
Question 2 – The Draft
In order to send troops to Veitnam, the United States used the draft system. The draft was a controversial issue, and many Americans not only protested the draft, but made attempts to avoid it. First, tell me how the draft system works and who was drafted (age, socioeconomic status, “class” (upper, middle, lower) etc…). Then, tell me the ways many Americans expressed their disagreement with the draft, either with symbolic gestures or taking actions to literally avoid being drafted.
They draft system is a lottery for drafting anyone into the military, by, their working class age and, whether or not they were in a form of education, had disabilities or were married as we'll as some who need to stay home to support their families.
They would gather then names of those eligible to join, and called their name so that they would come to were the local drafting was held to be evaluated. They mostly pick from poor or working class. Americans express their disagreement with protests. To avoid being drafted some would flee and hide from the government, some would start protests, some of the wealthy families, or ones with political power would bribe there way out of being drafted.
For question 2 most information was gotten from ( http://thevietnamwar.info/vietnam-war-draft/ ), and then place with my own words, as well as knowledge I had already had before hand on the subject. I apologize for no direct sentences and citing but all knowledge beside my own was gotten from this
cite.
