Gym Set Vs Single Set
This week has been interesting. I was fortunate to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family in the United States and I read about one of the most debatable topics related to physically training – single or multiple sets. We all have friends who spend at least three hours in the gym and others, who only spend about thirty minutes to an hour. Is it safe to argue the person in the gym for three hours is doing multiple sets, while the person in the gym for an hour is only doing a single set? Probably not because no one knows how many exercises the athlete is actually doing. The real discussion comes down to single or multiple sets, which is the better of the two for optimal training. Therefore, it will be wise to use single set exercises for quite a number of different reasons. For example, I will use single over multiple sets during an off season and coming back from an injury. It will not make sense for me to destroy my body after a full season of sports. Body needs rest and eight hours a day just is not enough at a higher level. In addition, if the athlete is rehabilitating from a recent injury, single sets will be the better choice to progress to his or her normal weight range. If the person is not an athlete and never been to a gym or lifted a dumbbell; then single set exercises will be a great introduction to learn the fundamentals and gain the confidence to work out. Another example, Person A does 1 set of 5 repetitions with 5 different exercises with max load. Person B does 5 sets of 10 reputations with 5 different exercises with 70-80% load. Who will gain more strength over a longer period of time? The answer is not important because it implies both are achieving the same amount of results over a period of time. Therefore, I believe both single and multiple sets are useful based on the training plan and

    CrossFit’s program has become a competitive sport and has transformed average people into “the toughest athletes on Earth.” These toughest athletes then compete against each other in the CrossFit Games. The goal of the CrossFit Games “is to find the fittest athletes, not to produce an easily replicable workout program.” The CrossFit Games are divided into three sections: the Open, Regionals, and the Reebok CrossFit Games. The first section, the Open, athletes as young as fourteen years old can participate in the five-week winter experience where athletes complete five given workouts. Athletes from all over the world complete these workouts in CrossFit affiliated gyms after the workout is released online every Thursday for the upcoming week. After this stage, the top seventeen world regions send the top athletes from the Open to the Regionals. The Regionals portion of the CrossFit Games is a “live, three-day competition” usually held in May. Athletes out of the seventeen regions then try to qualify either as an individual or with team for the Reebok CrossFit Games.     So we started the program and firstly in our group we started doing upper body work which was fine, it did get tough in some of the exercises we did mainly because we tried to do much but luckily we didn’t get any injuries so we carried on with it and with that I noticed improvements in my upper body strength within that period of two weeks. Also I was working at that time so I would have gone in the gym more times but I could due to that but also because of where I work and the department I work in, you’re having to constantly take out cages and pallets, the cages can weigh up to 500kg and the pallets can weigh to 1000kg and above and that also helped as well with improving my body strength and fitness as well so that also helped. The strengths of this was that my upper body strength has improved and that I am able to do the same exercises quicker. And that I have got a better muscle definition now to my arms and shoulders now. The weaknesses of this was that I wasn’t able to come in any more due to engagements with work and also course work and rugby training.
