JLS named Hardest Working Band. WHAT?!
Charly Isbell investigates the talent and capability of 2012’s ‘hardest working band’.
X Factor boy band JLS were awarded the title ‘Hardest Working Band of 2012’ according to an article posted in The Independent last month. The award was dished out by PRS For Music, who are the company that collect royalties on behalf of songwriters, and is clearly silly. Apparently it was bestowed upon them because JLS played a whopping 34 UK gigs in 2012. Yeah, 34 whole gigs. Big whoop. We’re sure the countless bands who spend pretty much the whole year touring the UK are in complete awe.

That was painful. But I admit, they have different work to the popular rock bands of today like Foo Fighters and Biffy Clyro. For a start they have lots of press attention; interviews, TV appearances, signings, press conferences, photo shoots, endorsements etc. The boring stuff. So in that respect, JLS probably are pretty hard working, I mean it must be pretty tough fighting off so many screaming teenage girls. My hat’s off to you. It must be horrid. However, it’s impossible to compare them with the likes of Biffy Clyro who have been a band for 17 years, doing gigs nearly every day of the year. Maybe this is just a case of badly chosen words and poorly placed emphasis. Give them the ‘Hardest Working Mainstream Pop Act of 2012’ or something. And no emphasis, on the number of gigs please, that grinds my gears. Let’s hope this year the award goes to a better band; one that are releasing albums so often that it’s becoming a weekly occurrence and never comes off the road, a band definitely more worthy than the
