Harlem Hopscotch Poem Summary

In a neighborhood full of poverty, it's common for people to be counted out and not expected to do anything close to great. This means struggling. Becoming something great always has struggle in it especially when you have no support system or if you don’t have the necessary resources. If you don’t have much, it would be very hard when you have a dream of becoming something great. And you also have everyone doubting you or even telling you that you “can’t”. Some people may take this doubt and use it as motivation. “Harlem Hopscotch” was first published in 1969, written by Maya Angelou. Angelou was a writer and a civil rights activist. The poem basically tells you not to expect good things, to actually expect the worst. And there’s always someone
You don't simply give up just because someone didn't acknowledge what you've done, you keep pushing and moving forward just like in a game of hopscotch. Again, "They think I lost, I think I won just pieces the whole poem together. She is proving the point that even if you do make accomplishments, people may not recognize them and they will still look at you as dumb or useless but you know in your mind what you've accomplished and that's what it's all about in my opinion. As long as you do not give up and you keep pushing forward despite how someone may feel about you and despite how many time they've told you that you "can't". You ignore people that try to hold you back and you push past the many road blocks and you go for what you and follow your dreams. In the end, when you get there, it will feel so much better because you actually fought for what you wanted and you believed in yourself. You could have just listened to the people who told you that you couldn’t and let the trials and tribulations hold you back but not doing that just makes the victory even
