Harley Case Study Psychology
Harley is a 14-year- old student at Comsewogue High School. He has a Multiple Disabilities Special Education Classification. He is classified as a student with an Other Health Impairment (OHI) and a Emotional Disturbance (ED). Harley is diagnosed with an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Bipolar Disorder. He receives a Resource Room services and his placement is within the mainstream general education coursework for all of her subjects and electives. In addition, Harley receives individual psychological counseling. As per his IEP,

An updated Social History completed 11/11/17, indicated that Harley is “doing well” since his transition. He is currently in good health and there were no reported hospitalizations in the past

He had a significant medical history and was on medication for diagnosis of ADHD and Bipolar Disorder. Harley’s Psycho-educational evaluation revealed that he was functioning within the average range of ability. Due to his behaviors, a manifestation determination meeting was also conducted at this time. The results indicated that he presented with significant depressive behaviors, which affected his peer and staff relationships. Harley was classified and recommended for a Resource Room placement. Dimino’ responses indicated that Harley displays a Very High Clinical level of emotional disturbance characteristics. His responses suggest Harley has an inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers, inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances, a general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression, and a tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems. These characteristics appear to have a moderate impact and a mild severity on Harley’s educational performance. Furthermore, Mr. Dimino views Harley’s behaviors to be at-risk for being deemed socially maladjusted. “Socially maladjusted” refers to a persistent pattern of violating social norms with truancy, substance abuse, a perpetual struggle with authority, is easily frustrated, impulsive, and manipulative. Socially maladjusted behavior includes aggressive or rule-breaking behavior, calloused, manipulative and narcissistic attitudes, as well as school-aversive attitude and

    It is believed by Mental Health America that 1 in 5 adults have a mental disorder such as ADHD or Bipolar. Behavior and mental disorder affect millions, and are meant to be treated as any other disease would be. These issues can have serious impacts on students. In an academic journal on the peer problems in children certain behavior issues, it was emphasized that "children with inattentive-impulsive-overactive behaviors, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and children with oppositional defiant disorder experience higher rates of peer rejection, isolation, loneliness, and fewer friendships" (Andrade 2183). The fact that One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest represents behavioral issues as not being an issue is problematic. Studies show there are many complications with such illnesses. Further troubling is the fact that the setting is a psychiatric hospital that does very little in the form of aiding the patients. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest should not be taught in schools, because it desensitizes student to the the illnesses that are behavioral issues. In addition to desensitizing students, the book may imbue students to act out, as they expect positive outcomes from their experience of the book.     Commission on Excellence in Special Education (2002) stated that “post-school success is the ultimate indicator of school reform” (p. 45), this is challenging schools to ensure that students with disabilities are adequately equipped with the skills and supports needed for adult life. It is important to implement strategies that address the needs of the individual with Emotional Disturbance. Relative to peers without disabilities, students with ED experience elevated dropout rates, diminished rates of participation in postsecondary education, higher levels of un- employment and underemployment, lower rates of civic and community participation and higher rates of incarceration.     Anthony Burgess's writing style in his most famous novel, A Clockwork Orange, is different to say the least. This novel is praised for its ingenuity, although many are disturbed by Burgess's predictions for the future. However, for many, it is close to impossible to comprehend without outside help. This is because Burgess created a language specifically for this novel, called Nadsat. This Russian-based language forms conversations between the narrator, Alex, and his teenage, delinquent friends. There are many assumptions as to why Burgess chose to complicate A Clockwork Orange by filling it with the confusing Nadsat language. Some opinions are that the language shows A Clockwork Orange readers where Alex and his "droogs" were located socially in society, or that Burgess was attempting to brainwash his audience, just as the authority figures brainwashed Alex and other members of their community, or finally, to show the shift from immature, young adults to normal, mature people.
