Signs and gestures are used in everyday life and there are very common ones which most people would immediately recognise, for example thumbs-up to suggest approval. A facial expression is the movement of the muscles beneath a person’s skin and it often demonstrates someone’s state of mind. For example if a person is upset they may look down and have upwardly slanted eyebrows and a frown. On the other hand a person who is happy will probably smile and have crescent-shaped eyes. Eye-to-eye contact can also show how a person is feeling or what they may be thinking. If a person avoids eye contact it may indicate that they are upset or annoyed, whereas a person who has wide eyes may suggest that they are excited. Facial expressions can help professionals understand how a person may be feeling or thinking. It is also very important that professionals show the right facial expressions too, for example they should smile when speaking to someone to show that they are interested and happy to be with them.
