“Nurturing Students to Aspire and Achieve”
Grade 8 Health Assignment
Name:
1. a) How does stress affect you? What physical and emotional effects do you notice when you are stressed?
Stress affects me in many ways. Because of stress, I cannot think right, and can't concentrate on one thing. I keep thinking about the reason I am stressed. I don't even care about whats going on because I try to think of a way to resolve my problem. An emotional effect when stressed for me would be not responding to things the way I do. It's like my head can just focus on that one thing. Along with that, a physical effect would be my heart beating faster when I think about it.
b) What do you normally …show more content…
do to cope with stress?
I do some activities which take my mind off of my problems. Such as play sports, hang out with my friends, watch a movie, read, listen to music and all my other hobbies. However the best thing to do is tell someone about it.
By doing this you can really feel better. I think I would tell my parents unless it is something I don't want them to know about.
c) What are some other things you could do?
Other things I would do this go to some place which helps me relieve stress. However overall, I don't think there is anything else I would do besides the things that I stated in the answers above. The main point is that you have to let go of it. Doesn't matter how, but you really should. It will benefit you in many ways. That's because you will face a lot of problems in life greater than these and you have to overcome them. I think letting go of stress should be a habit which will help you in life.

What would your response normally be?
Being in 8th grade, my friends and I always make fun of each other, it's like an everyday thing. Therefore my normal response would probably be saying something back to them. That's because like I said, we all always make fun of each other and call each other names all the time so it isn't such a big deal for us.
What do you think the best response would be, and why?
Even though my normal response would be saying something back to the person, I don't think that would be the best response. The best response for me would be not saying anything and going along with it because I have no problem if others make fun of me since I'm used to it.
However unless it does matter to me, I would just approach the person after class and tell them not to do what they did.

3. Choose a mental disorder from the list on Moodle. Research what it is, why people are affected by it, what the risk factors are, how it is treated, and what people can do to avoid it. Write at least 300 words (20 points):
Insomnia
Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease. By definition, insomnia is “difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep or both” or the perception of poor quality sleep. Insomnia may therefore be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep. Insomnia is not defined by a specific number of hours of sleep that one gets, since individuals vary widely in their sleep needs and practices. Most adults have experienced insomnia or sleeplessness at one time or another in their lives. Studies have shown that combining medical and non-medical treatments typically is more successful in treating insomnia than either one alone. Non-medical treatments would include things such as sleep hygiene, relaxation therapy, stimulus control, and sleep restriction. Insomnia has a numerous number of risk factors. One of them would be gender. Insomnia is more common in women than men, although men are not immune from insomnia. Age would also be another common risk factor because along with changes in sleep patterns, insomnia increases with age. Having mental health disorders or being under a lot of stress can also lead to insomnia. Travelling long distances can cause insomnia because of jet lag from travelling across multiple time zones. The last risk factor is working at night and changing shifts a lot. Prevention of insomnia centers around promotion of a healthy lifestyle. A balance of rest, recreation, and exercise in combination with stress management, regular physical examinations, and a healthy diet can do much to reduce the risk. Learn to use physical and mental relaxation techniques. Exercise regularly during the day, especially do exercises before dinner. Establish a regular sleep schedule. This involves setting a regular bedtime and wake-up time and making every attempt to stick to it, including on the weekends. Eat light meals and schedule dinner four to five hours before bedtime. A light snack before bedtime would also help sleeping however a large meal would have the opposite affect. Avoid any kind of fluids before bedtime so that sleep is not disturbed by the need to urinate. Insomnia can really affect a person because sleep is something absolutely needed by everybody, everyday. It can really make your day hard and frustrating if you were not able to sleep the last night. Therefore everybody should stick to the habits for preventing insomnia since it can happen with anyone.
