High School Fundraiser
How would you raise money? Raising money for an organization or personal use can be entertaining. Bake sells, car washes, or even selling little knick knacks are different things you can do to bring in the money. Churches, scouts, and alethic teams are always having fundraisers to benefit them. Booker T. Washington, in Up from Slavery, was raising money to have a building added to the school, named the Alabama Hall, in honor of the state.

Raising money can be interesting and beneficial. Once at church we had a fundraiser for our different choirs, to buy more robes and microphones. That week we had three fundraiser on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Monday, we sold baked goods like fresh bread, cookies, cupcakes, mini pies, and muffins. My grandma and I brought the fresh loaves of bread, and everyone else brought what they could. Next, on Wednesday, we had a class on decorating phones cases. The charge was $2 and it was opened to the community. Finally on Friday, it was movie night. The cost was $2 also, $1 for the movie and $1 for popcorn and drink. Just like General Armstrong and Hampton helped finance to build Alabama Hall, as well as introduced the school to the attention of the general public, the community of trinity garden help finance the robes and microphones. …show more content…

    The most common way Port Allen High students raise money for such thing is bake sales and market sales. In bake sales students buy baked goods from the store or make baked goods at home and they bring them to school. At lunch is the only time when students can sell their goods. Teacher permission and supervision is required for these types of things. Although a conflict of interest is students not getting approval from the teachers to host a bake sale because teachers simply can't supervise students. The way to solve the problem is to get teachers who are available at certain times. A student points out a way in which students get involved is being part of Beta Club. Every year Beta Club sells World Finest chocolate to either students, faculty, or anyone outside of school. The money is fundraised for the school and the school gains a sponsor for the school. The problem is not everyone is in the Beta Club but students can be encourage to buy what other students are selling. At this point every student can help fundraise the money for their school.     Washington was the nation’s most influential black leader. He had access to the most powerful political and business leaders in the United States. He would even become an advisor to the President. Washington was a former slave with no money who, with help; taught himself to read; was a very religious person; always the top student in his class; worked his way through school, and people admired him. Washington soothed white people and reassured black Americans as he counseled conciliation, patience, and agricultural and mechanical training as the most effective means to bridge the racial divide. His 1895 speech at the Cotton States Exposition in Atlanta elicited praise from both white and black listeners. (Darlene Clark Hine, et al., The African-American Odyssey, p. 443) Washington cleverly spoke in a way to raise up black aspirations without making white people fearful enough to kill and change laws. The south was only three decades out of the Civil War, and one of every three people was black. Many blacks in the south were kept illiterate and impoverished. Washington told whites that if they kept this up they will also be down. But, if they help lift blacks up, they and their community will also be lifted. He advised blacks to not be so distressed where they could not see the opportunity around them, and that their destiny was in the south. He also stated to cast down their buckets where they were in areas of trades and mechanics to live by production with their hands. During this time, black white collar workers such as lawyers could not find much work. Washington thought being a doctor was great, but stated; don't miss the opportunity in front of you right now. Washington also expressed to whites that black people have never treated them wrong and since their destiny rest in blacks, stop brutalizing them and help blacks get an education.
