The average high school student’s start time is 7:59 a.m., which health experts say is not an ideal time for a for the beginning of a high school student’s school day. That early in the day most students are not alert nor focused on what they are doing.

The arguments are valid until a certain point; however, when looking at the bigger picture the most important thing about the start times for high school students is their education. If students are driven and want to participate in the sport they want they still will. The start times will only be pushed back an hour or so which would not make a significant difference in sports. If the parents are not able to look after their younger children when they get home, the school should provide after-school activities options. In this everyone can benefit because the younger children will become more involved, the older kids can get their sibling after school, and the parent would not have to worry.
The most important thing about high school start times should depend on the

Students ask themselves “why does school have to start so early?” on a daily basis without receiving an answer. That is a norm for middle and high school students, and it shouldn’t be. School start times are too early, and need to be change to a later time in order for students to get their full 8 hours of rest.…

Do you know the feeling when you get good grades or win a game for your team? It gives you confidence and makes you feel proud that you’ve accomplished something. But with the later starting times you might have a struggle between grades and sports. With the later starting times it might be an obstacle to get to sports events or making it to any after school activity when you might have a school class at that time. Or the school sports will be releasing athletes later from practice because of the time taken off by starting school and dismissing students from school later. In my opinion I think that students shouldn't start later because of traffic with transportation and after school activities interfering.…

By doing so, students would be more alert and wanting to learn, and they can become successful. An issue that comes along with changing the high school hours are the diverse amounts of after school activities. With ending school later, these activities would have to end later also. A teenager's natural sleep clock wants to go to bed later anyway, so it would not affect that teenager if he or she gets home late. For intense, a teenager who plays volleyball is used to getting out of practice at 5:30 p.m., instead she would get out at 7:30 p.m.. She would still have time to go home and do homework and other things and would not have to worry about going to bed or waking up early because of her natural sleep clock. With this not being an issue, high schools need to change their hours to being later. One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

For this debate I am debating why school time should stay the same. J.C.M.S middle school in Sierra Vista has a delayed start time of 9:00 a.m., and finish school at 4:00 p.m. This affects the children who are involved if afternoon sports, most time not getting out until 6:00 p.m sometimes later. If you have homework that same night after spending two hours doing a sport you might procrastinate and not do your homework at all or you will be tired and end up making mistakes that should not have been made. An earlier start time ensures an earlier release time letting sports start earlier and homework being done at an earlier time while not as exhausted from the day.…

However if school starts at a later time then it will also end at a later time which causes various problems. These problems would affect students academically, socially, and emotionally. These problems wouldn’t only affect students but it would negatively impact those around them as well.…

Schools that have adjusted their schedule to start later than the standard 8:03 a.m schedule have students with better performance, so it would optimal to adjust the start time to 8:30 a.m minimum. By further allowing more time in the morning, both teachers and students can be more satisfied since they can have breakfast or do whatever they wish to do. It is debateful that starting school later means it ends later in the evening, however with the current schedule it causes more harm overall - thus compromise is necessary for better results instead of personal…
