High School Teamwork
“The strength of the team is each member. The strength of each member is the team.” This quote by Phil Jackson is quite true because in order for a team to be successful, the team must recognize each member’s strengths and utilize each member accordingly for the success of the team. Each team member must place what is best for the team above what is best for himself or herself as an individual player. Each member on a high school team must fulfill his or her roles in order for the team to succeed. Being part of a team helps a person gain character traits for life and also helps them experience and learn valuable life lessons. Teamwork teaches and promotes many things including collaboration, cooperation, respect, responsibility and accountability. …show more content…

In high school athletics, team unity is one of the most important lessons learned. As Babe Ruth once said, “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime.” When you play on a high school sports team, no matter the sport, you will have to learn how to work with people in order to succeed. At the beginning of the season, the team as a whole will set goals for itself, and each player will strive toward those goals. Setting goals helps all high school athletes to be successful both in the classroom and in their athletics. Many high school teams set goals for the end of the season to be Conference, District, Sectional, and State Champions. Also when playing on a high school sports team, you create friendships within your team that are unlike any other. These friends are the ones that will have your back whether you are wearing a jersey or not. You create an unbreakable bond during all the bus rides and long, hard

Being one of my high school’s student leaders, both on and off the court, both inside and outside the classroom and both inside and outside my immediate community, has taught me that family is first, consistency is key, and consensus on the one common goal ensures success. As the captain of my Freshman Basketball team and now as the Head Manager of my Varsity Women’s Basketball team, this lesson has been learned over and over again in the past four years. I carry this with me everywhere I go. In each organization I am a member of and with every experience, focusing on family, consistency, and common goal is what has allowed me to motivate others as a leader to realize success. John Wooden (NCAAB Hall of Fame coach) said, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” High school sports are usually beneficial to all parties involved, such as the athletes, parents and the schools that have the athletic programs. The athletes that play high school sports learn countless lessons on life, how to be healthy with exercise, and the extra incentive to keep up the grade to play these sports. Parents of high school athlete’s get an opportunity to watch their child succeed at something he or she loves. Parents can also benefit financially, when their child is good enough at a sport to get offered a scholarship which may pay for all of college. Nearly 65% of children say they participate in sports to be with their friends (Statistic Brain). Sports were established so that the individual could not only exercise, but also to compete against a rival. Just as there are individual sports, there are team sports in high school. The idea of a team sport is that every single person on the field or court must work in unison to have the greatest opportunity to win. In addition to the increasing popularity of sports, the average child’s age when they join a team is decreasing. For example, the age that a child joins a basketball team has shifted from fourth grade to first grade or even kindergarten in the past decade. One reason high school sports aren’t beneficial is because they create a lot of pressure. According to the video “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” by KCRA, sports are sometimes the only way students can get into a good college and be able afford it. Experts say that your child's entire team will suffer if the parents are pressuring their kids (KCRA.com, “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” ). This fact is important because it proves, when parents put pressure on their children it does not benefit them, in fact it is actually setting them up for life in an unhealthy way. “The first phase of development in teams is membership. It is the first phase because until members psychologically join, there is no team but just a collection of individuals who have been grouped together. For a team to develop, its members must want to belong to the team and come to identify with the team” (Bushe & Coetzer, 2007, para. 10). How the basketball team was formed were through tryouts. Numerous high school students signed up to be one of the chosen to support the school and take part in its sports program.
