Question 1 Primary source:
Mahatma Ghandi was famously known for leading India to independence against the British empowered India. The movement against the British ruled India had leaded them to independence and created civil rights and freedom across the world. Ghandi was well known for various protests and movements but most significant was the 400 kilometre march in order to banish the Dandi salt tax that was imposed by the British in the 1930’s. For this
Ghandi was imprisoned in India and South Africa for many years. Although this was a setback, it did not deter Ghandi from practising in what he believed in and that was for India to be free and independent from the British regime. Ghandi was a simple man who wanted what was best for his country and many others around the world that were suffering from the
British. Ghandi had a role to play in India’s involvement in World War 1, as he was approached by the Viceroy of India in order to help with recruitment. Ghandi had agreed on terms that he would not be involved in the killing. He had created some leaflets, which had the heading as ‘Appealing for enlistment’. On the leaflet Ghandi had wrote ‘To bring about such a state of things we should have the ability to defend ourselves, that is, the ability to bear arms and to use them...If we want to learn the use of arms with the greatest possible despatch, it is our duty to enlist ourselves in the army’.
