A leader is a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country according to the New Oxford Dictionary. There are many people who have or could be called a leader based on this definition but that does not fully constitute them as a leader. Many people who have been called an influential leader do not deserve to be that title. There are a small number of so called leaders that have actually met all the requirements to earn the title of a leader. Without a doubt there are multiple people who have earned the name and deserve to be called leaders, but there are some who do not meet the definition of a leader. Adolf Hitler is a man known best for his attempted genocide and his leadership of the German army. Many people believe he was an powerful leader but he does not meet the requirements to be a leader. Extensive research has been done over many countries and has found that honesty is the single most important characteristic in a leader (Green). Hitler did not lead with honesty and truthfulness. He did however possess other skills which make him so easily mistaken as a true leader. He was organized, had his ideas well planned out, he was extremely confident, fully committed to what he was doing and he could influence people without a problem. These are all required skills of a leader except for the single most important one. Honesty. Although Hitler did contain numerous skills that aid in the ability to be a leader, without the key element of honesty, he can not be called a …show more content…
One person is Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is a prime example of a man who meets the requirements and is rightfully called a leader. Lincoln showed people his leadership skills throughout his presidency most clearly through his honesty (Schneider). The nickname of honest Abe clearly illustrates how he met the more difficult requirement of honesty, but that alone is not what makes him a leader. Lincoln also showed strengths in all the other attributes that make up a leader. He was confident and able to make extremely tough decisions that could have turned out with serious consequences. He was committed to the nation and all the people under his control and did what he thought was best. He excelled in his communication skills and his way of motivating and influencing people especially in his speeches. A dictionary definition of a leader is a guiding hand in a movement or group. My definition of a leader is someone who stands out amongst the rest and steps up to the task and helps the “followers” advance and strive to become a leader as well. The only way a leader can be effective is by leading by example. A prime example of this is Malala Yousafzai. She was shot in the face for trying to go to school. If she hadn’t gone to school she wouldn’t have been shot, but she also wouldn’t have a Nobel Peace prize. She is now using her story to speak for access to education for everyone. A leader is someone who leads by example and uses their skills to help others succeed.…

There are many definitions of leadership. The Collins English dictionary defines leadership as “the leader(s) of a party or group.” Yet true leadership is much more than that. A leader can be the chief executive officer of an organization, or a first year employee who leads his or her team to success behind the scenes. A leader might lead through official authority and power, yet just as often great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connections. Teaching others to be a leader is a daunting task within itself (Pankaew, 2013).…

A leader: a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. This is the textbook definition of a leader although, is this the only way to define a leader? Can a leader be someone who, despite all odds against them, can come out on top, and inspire others to do to them same? Can a leader be someone who's life is filled with physical, as well as emotional pain, but see’s nothing but the best in everything she sees? Can a leader be someone who questions the status quo, and spits in the face of the social norm? Before researching this individual, I might have answer no to these questions.
