Honors Program
I have had lots of opportunities to work as a member of a team especially as a student of Honors Program.
Honors Program is a two years research based program that provides space and resources for students to conduct group research in the first year, and independent research in the second year. I am working with two other students to complete a semester-long research project. For our research, we are looking at how plastics bottles can be repurposed to build walls of houses. My teammates are art and theater majors. They bring creativity in the team. I am maths and science major, and I bring my curiosity and structure to the team. I enjoy brainstorming ideas before making a decision, and working in a group provides those opportunities. At
the same time if team members are not equally invested in the project, it could slow down the dynamic of the group. I had an ecology project where my teammate was not as motivated as I was. She wouldn’t show up for meetings. Then, I emailed her asking why she didn’t show up for the meeting and reminding her of the due dates. I believe communication is really important, while working in a group project. When we started our Honors Project, we set our expectations and goals for the project, which helped us to be honest about our progress, and speak up if we had issues with teammates.
I enjoy working in a group because it adds diverse opinion to the project. The rewards of working in a group are the division of work, share ideas, group support and the feeling of accomplishing a task together as a group. I think when I am part of a group, I enjoy the journey by building relations with my teammates and sharing experiences.
Working in a group also come with challenges. There is always fear that not everyone is contributing and investing equally to complete the project. Sometimes, we may feel less motivated if we don't share the similar viewpoint. If everyone is not equally motivated, it will be difficult to move forward together as a team.
When I am working on a group project, I set forward our expectations and what we want to achieve from the project. Also, holding each other accountable has helped me to complete the work on time.
