Harry S.
Truman finally was elected as Vice President under Franklin Roosevelt in 1944, and on his death, Truman took office on April 12th, 1945. Over the next five months, significant events occurred to help with the conclusion of WWII. One was how the U.S. secretly started developing an atomic weapon for the use to settle the score of war. This was also known as the Manhattan Project. Meanwhile, over in Germany, the allied forces were cornering the Germans. Therefore, forcing their surrender.By then, scientists in the U.S. had completed their marvelous weapon. Yet finally, they dropped this atomic bomb on Hiroshima August 6th, 1945. Now finally, the war struggle was ended and peace was restored to Europe. But what would Germany receive as a
punishment?
As Germany’s punishment of war, they were split in 2. 1 part controlled by the allied forces, and the other by the soviet union. When this happened, the people of Berlin were devastated, because as of then, they were split and starved. In West Berlin, the Soviets stopped the economy and traffic. With Harry S. Truman as President, he had to decide what to do. So he came up with the Berlin airlift. In this, he gave up an air which was used to send supplies. This took place until May 12th, 1949, when the Berlin wall was torn down. This was celebrated not only by the people of Berlin, but by the people of America. Because now, the signs of the cold war were done.
Though WWII was concluded, the tension between the U.S. and the Russians was still high. With the Soviets trying to export communism among other nations, the U.S. had to move to stop them. Nevertheless, when communist North Korea attacked South Korea , the Korean war began. Although he disliked the feeling of war, President Harry Truman sent troops to South Korea, on June 27th 1950, to assist allies against the Russians. During this, the Northern part of Korea fell to the Soviets side of communism, and the Southern to a government run by the people ( like the U.S.) and for the people. After many years of fighting, the war didn’t get really far for Truman, and now his presidency was concluded. On January 20th, 1953, the decisions of this war were passed on to Dwight D. Eisenhower.
In conclusion, Harry S. Truman’s presidency was over, and now he was just a normal civilian. I chose him because of his impressive achievements. He helped our country in a variety different ways, then died on December 26th, 1972 from a lung congestion. Are you intrigued yet? If so, then learn even more.
