Some of these rules included learning Spanish, converting to Catholicism and absolutely no slavery since Mexico has long since abolished slavery. According to a letter written by Rafeal Antonio Manchola, a Tejano that was witnessing the horrid acts done by the American settlers in 1826, he states, “They have been using their own colonist as judges and practicing their own laws, forgetting that they swore to obey the laws of Mexico.” Before the Americans were allowed to step foot on Mexican territory they had to promise to the guidelines presented to them and once they moved in they decided to disobey the laws and create conflict. The expectations of the Americans once they moved in were clear and reasonable considering the land's value was very cheap to worth nothing as long as they followed the requirements, which they did not. The new settlers then go on to claim they were treated poorly by Mexico's government and felt unsafe due to the enforcement of putting soldiers in each establishment. As previously stated mexico wanted nothing to do with slavery as she had already abolished slavery. On the other hand, slavery in america was completely normal and very common. In a pamphlet “ The war in texas in 1836” written by Benjamin Lundy, an anti slavery activist, it states, “ The immideate cause and main goal of this war… has been to grab the large and valuable territory of texas from the mexican republic, in order to re establish the SYSTEM OF SLAVERY…” Not only did america want to spread across northe america but they also had hopes of using that new land to build a bigger slave market. The slave market is a cruel way of demanding labor on a human being and to go to war with a country just to gain more land to exauhst innocent people is insane and beyong unjust. Many people including Joshua Gidding felt that the war was unasked for and wrong.
