How Equilibrium Chloride Affects The Temperature Of Water
I this project, my group which consists of Jack, Justin, Mahi, and me. We were given the assignment to pick an experiment, change the independent variable, come up with a hypothesis, test our experiment with the new independent variable, and confirm or reject our hypothesis. We picked experiment 2. In this experiment, water was combined with baking soda. Then the temperature was taken, and finally calcium chloride was added, which formed a chemical reaction. Our lab question was how does the amount of calcium chloride affect the temperature of the product? We chose our independant variable to be the amount of calcium chloride added to the water/baking soda mixture. We had the dependant variable be the ending temperature. My hypothesis is IF we add more calcium chloride, THEN the temperature of the product will rise, BECAUSE the calcium chloride is what releases the gas when mixed with the water causing heat to be produced. It has a positive relationship. These variable show the selected relationship because the graph, from the origin, rises positively into the top right corner - proving it is a positive relationship. Looking at my data, I know that the calcium chloride is responsible for the rise in temperature because when we added more calcium chloride, the temperature rose higher than it had previously when we added less. This proves the calcium chloride is the reactant that is reason for the temperature rising. Some possible errors that could have possibly interfered with our experiment would be not washing the thermometer from measuring the starting temperature to the ending temperature. This could have possibly messed with our experiment because extra mixture could have gotten into the beaker while measuring the final temperature, causing the final temperature to not be 100% accurate.
