How Pride Affects the World
How pride affects the world
I do agree that pride is a wonderful terrible thing. In the story, The Scarlet Ibis, pride is what helped Doodle to do things he never could have done, but in a way it also led to his death. Doodle’s brother wanted a normal brother who could do things with him through his pride he had accomplished that. Ultimately though it was through his pride that he ended up having no brother at all. Pride was great for Doodle’s life because he got to experience things he never would have, but pride was a factor in Doodle’s death.
I believe that in the world that we live in pride helps people, but also hurts people like in the story. A quote from T.S. Eliot, American-English poet and playwright, says that, “Most of the trouble in the world is caused by people wanting to be important and proud.” I believe that is true because many wars are fought over land and a country wants to be a proud owner of new land. One reason The Revolutionary War was fought because the Americans were proud of what they were and the British were too proud to let America go. The Civil war and revolutionary act happened because blacks were proud of whom they were, but the Americans were too proud to let them free with equal rights. Pride has always affected the world we live in.
Pride can also help the world in a good way. The Ancient Greeks philosopher Aristotle had once said, “Pride seems to be a sort of crown of the virtues; for it makes them more powerful, and it is not found without them. Therefore it is hard to be truly proud; for it is impossible without nobility and goodness of character.” I believe that this is also true because if people do good things they later feel proud of themselves. If people keep doing good things to feel proud then pride can help reform the world. Pride can have people do good things so they can be recognized. Although people will be doing good things for themselves good things will still happen.
Pride truly is a wonderful terrible thing.

Even though Brother saw Doodle as a crazy brother that you would see in your dreams he was mean to him by making him do things he didn't want to. Too much pride had ridden over Brother as he did his best to change Doodle into an ordinary boy for he was ashamed of him even if it meant he was cruel and harsh in the process. Another example is after Brother had finally taught Doodle to successfully walk on his own. The narrator says “They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother”(3). What Brother had done for Doodle was great, but Brother had been mean to him in the process of teaching Doodle how to do anything like a normal boy. The narrator had too much pride for himself instead of his brother that everything he did was for himself simply because he was embarrassed. The short story “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst displays that too much pride has us treat our loved ones in a cruel…

Normally pride is a good thing for society. It keeps a healthy challenge between the people within the community. But too much pride can lead to tension and aggression. In The Lord of the Flies, Jack falls into this same situation. In the beginning of the book, Jack was nothing more than an innocent child who was uncomfortable in the situation he was in: “They knew why he hadn’t: because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood. (p.31)” Because he couldn’t kill the pig, Jack had thought that he had failed his friends and himself, and as a…

Many people would never consider pride as to being a sin, however the Catholic Church considers pride to be a sin because pride is about "me", "myself" and "I", they only worry about themselves and no one else. Although people might not believe it, today's society is filled with pride; from being proud of your heritage to being proud of your sexuality, pride is all around. However, the Catholic Church believes that pride is the foremost among the seven deadly sins because all a prideful person thinks only of himself, and that is the exact opposite of what the Catholic Church teaches. The Catholic Church wants them to forget about themselves and go out and help others. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Reverend Hale, Elizabeth and John Proctor all have a great deal of pride which in each case eventually decided their fate.…

Pride is one of the seven deadly sins. Its effect on people, however, is often subtle at the start and hard to detect. Most proud people will never consider themselves to be truly proud until they come face to face with the consequences of their pride. Sophocles and Shakespeare both address this dilemma in their plays Oedipus and Othello. Through their nobility, their tragic flaws, the fall these flaws cause, and the suffering and wisdom they derive from these falls, Oedipus and Othello reveal the true character of the tragic hero and show the devastating consequences of pride.…

The pride exhibited by a person reflects their personality. For instance, “Okonkwo said yes very strongly, so his chi agreed. And not only his chi but his clan too, because it judged a man by the work of his hands” (Achebe, page 27). This demonstrates how Okonkwo is so full of himself in thinking that the amount of work a person does should determine placement in society. Furthermore, “‘My father, they have killed me!’ as he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak” (Achebe page 61). At this point, pride has engulfed…
