How to Fine Dine
Dining etiquette is much more than simply “pinkies up” and refraining from belching at the table. Being well versed in the unsaid rules of etiquette is sure to be a useful life skill because you never know when you may need it. There are multiple instances throughout your life when having the skills and practice in fine dining will be beneficial in helping you succeed. Perhaps you have an important business meeting over a meal, or you’re invited to a gala, or perhaps you’re trying to court a lover, excelling in fine dining etiquette is imperative. A great rule for dining out is: when in doubt, dress nicer than expected, act politer than expected, and eat with ease and caution.

When dining out in a fine dining establishment, it is understood that you should go above and beyond your typical dress and as they say, “dress to impress”. Men must wear a suit jacket when dining in an elegant restaurant, and a full suit is recommended. Wearing a tie is advised as well. Of course, sneakers, sandals, or other casual foot attire such as boot shoes are unacceptable. Standard black, brown, or other neutral color dress shoes are expected. For the ladies, they should plan to wear a business quality dress or a suit. Women’s footwear is also imperative as changing shoes can drastically alter the quality of her outfit. Women should not wear sandals to a fine dining restaurant, rather close toed shoes or heals are best. It is also essential that the dressy clothes that you choose to wear look their best. Do your outfit justice by properly washing and pressing the clothes ahead of time. When dining out and especially when you’re trying to impress someone, it is impossible to be overdressed.
Once you arrive at the fancy destination in your dressy attire, you want to compose yourself in a way that will not draw negative attention to you. If

Like holding open the door for the person behind you, smiling at someone as you pass them on the street and in this case, taking detail into consideration. We live in an increasingly image conscious world, where looks and the way we dress make as much difference as our ability, and trying to really define yourself is really hard. Hands down, the well dressed male is now a universal phenomenon. So of course it is down to that individual to decide just how he will make his outfit stand out. The most effective way that I think you can separate yourself from the crowd is by paying attention to detail – the things that we think about, but never really think about. Offer to help with preparation or clean up after the meal is served. As far as table manners, one should remain standing until invited to sit down. The fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right hand while eating. The oldest person is usually served first and do not begin eating until the hosts starts. Also, you should keep elbows off the table and hands above the table while eating. Accepting a second helping is considered a compliment. It is also considered polite to soak up gravy with bread and it is not uncommon for people to share food from ones plate. Place your napkin next to your plate and lay your knife and fork parallel with the handles facing to the right when you have finished eating.
