The article that I found is called “Black educators fired from private Manhattan preschools because of race: suit”. The article is about five African American women that filled a lawsuit against their employers because of race discrimination. These women worked as educators at a private Manhattan preschool and were fired between 2010 and 2013 after the private preschool brought in a new head administrator named Renee Bock. They claimed they worked in a hostile environment and that after getting fired they were substituted by white educators. They accused Renee Bock because before she got the new position all the five educators reports showed that they all have satisfactory work evaluations, had experience and were qualified for the job. Most of them had been working there for years and were fired for senseless reasons. They suited the private school for lost wages and benefits as well as compensation for emotional suffering. For what I learned, after the women were fire there was not a diverse workforce and the majority of the employees were white. The first lesson learned in this case is to let all the high level and low-level employees the importance of creating a diverse workforce to prevent disparate treatment and disparate impact. The second lesson to be learned by the employers is that at the time of hiring they should let candidates know about their policy against discrimination and racism in any form. The third lesson learned from this situation is that to prevent racial discrimination in the workplace employers should trained employees in how to avoid discrimination and racism. Lastly the employer should encourage communication with employees so they are more likely to report racism. In this case the employer could have prevent this lawsuit if he would have built an open communication with his employees because the chances that employees would have reported any case of discrimination could have been higher.

    Based on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 employers are not allowed to discriminate against a potential employee based on race, color, sex, religion, or national origin. In the Dunlap v. Tennessee Valley Authority case this title of the civil rights act was violated. An African American man named David Dunlap who gave almost the exact same answers as white candidates who got the job and who had 20 years of experience in boiler making was not chosen for any of the 10 positions available with the TVA. The issue is not only that he wasn’t hired but based on the score sheet he was highly discriminated against. When asked how many days he missed Dunlap told the employers that he never missed days unless sick or having a family emergency, two other candidates who just so happened to be white gave almost the exact same answer. On the score sheet for this question Dunlap was given a score of 3.7 while the other two potential employees were given scores of 4.2 and 5.5. Also when he was asked about how many accidents he had in the field he replied none and was given a low score but another candidate whom had at least two accidents was given a higher score than Dunlap. The issue at hand was that, his score sheet was heavily manipulated putting him in number 14 out of the 21 candidates that had applied. The top ten got hired.…

    This is how Jenson and her fellow woman peers felt about working at Eveleth Taconite Co. These woman worked alongside many men who used abusive language, stalking, threats, intimidation, and sexual harassment. Jenson tried fighting for herself and others by filing a complaint, but that made matters worse because then the retaliation was slashed tires. This lead to Jenson asking for compensation for damages and mental anguish, but Eveleth Taconite Co. did not agree. Eventually Jenson left because of post-traumatic stress disorder. After years of fighting they finally came to an agreement and settled outside of court. Eveleth Taconite Co. should have handled the situation from the beginning by having classes and training on sexual harassment and holding people accountable to not have a hostile work environment. Instead they chose to hide it, and not treat all their employees especially the woman equally.     If I were a manager, I would not even allow discrimination to happen at my workplace and I would never allow a second chance for an employee who participated in discriminating against another employee. I would let all new employees know that discrimination is not allowed and that would be fired after their first offense of discrimination. I do not think that this is acceptable the one of the police officers was discriminating against lower ranked officers. The situation with Carlone should have been taken care of much sooner than it was and I do not think he should have been let off by the courts so easily because he not only had complaints against him from one person, but from two.     When I first registered for this course I didn’t fully understand what the disciple of Human Resource Management entitled. I thought that those working in the human resources dealt solely with the recruiting and dismissal of individuals. However, after reading the first chapter of the textbook it became very clear to me that this area of study encompasses much more. I began to understand that the staff members of a human resource department engage in five main activities that range from supporting employees to ensuring the legal compliance of organizations (Dessler, 2011). The purpose and strategic roles of human resource management were later reinforced and expanded on during our first lecture. During the lecture we watched a short video about the Google Corporation and then broke up into teams for discussion on the clips relevance to HR. As a group we decided to use the definition of HRM given in the text book, “the activities, policies and practices involved in obtaining, utilizing and retaining the appropriate number of skilled employees to accomplish an organization objectives” (Dessler, 2011) as a base for our analysis . We determined that the HR team at Google was successfully doing their jobs because what was portrayed in the video perfectly complemented the definition given by the textbook. We reasoned this because we felt that Google was effectively obtaining, utilizing and retaining their employees.     David Dunlap brought suit under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, alleging racial discrimination by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
