“Men joined the Marine Corps for many reasons . . . I’d joined up to dodge the draft and ended up being sent to war” (Brady 8-9). This brief yet poignant statement begins the story of how James Brady ended up serving in the Korean War. As a young adult the draft was being reinstated and Brady did not feel the desire to fight in a war. He and a few of his friends decided instead to join the Platoon Leaders Class with the Marines, which had students spend two summers at the marine Corps Schools in Quantico, Virginia. After these two summers, graduates would become Lieutenants, but they could not be drafted. Shortly after Brady graduated, the war began in Korea and his class learned they had to prepare to be sent out. The Coldest War: A Memoir of Korea is a first-person narrative of Brady’s life during the war, including his time as a platoon leader, his interactions with other members of the military, and his own personal thoughts during this time.…

When it came to China deciding to support North Korea, they made this choice because of the shared hatred for the enemy of North Korea (Yufan, Zhihai 94). In addition, this decision by China, also stems back to 1949 when Chairman Mao delivered a speech exclaiming how he is denouncing the United States as an imperialistic power seeking to dominate China, and with that he said China would now lean toward the side of the Soviet Union (Yufan, Zhihai 97). The Chinese Communist party did not want any more possibilities of United States ideals spreading into China, thus the reason for the Chinese leaning toward the Soviets. With that said, the Soviets joining North Korea is what made the Chinese join North Korea as well. In the aid of North Korea,…

So when the American naval came to Korea, the Koreans attacked them, and later, the Americans attacked back. Shin confessed to him that he really has no idea what can be done besides spreading the word like he has been trying to do since his escape (Philling). Shin continued to say to the interviewer that David Philling and him also went on to discuss that the only full proof solution to the political prison camps, besides the spreading of information about them, is complete invasion in North Korea to liberate my countrymen (Philling). The mentioning of liberation hung in the air between Shin and the interviewer; it was something that was so close yet so far from happening. Breaking the silence, the interviewer changed the subject by asking another set of questions.…

The kinds of abuses North Koreans have suffered at the hands of their government are public execution, starvation, and thought – control, religious persecution, forced marriages. The way the government torture it’s people is horrible; same of examples of the torture are when a 14 year old accidentally dropped a sewing machine in a prison camp was punished by having his finger cut off another officer used a blowtorch to bludgeon to death to a sick prisoner who hadn’t worked fast enough and the worst part of this is the officer who did this was rewarded with right to attend a university from the government. I think the North Korean people haven’t risen up demand freedom because their government is superior to them and they have no power. They also know that if they start a revolution against their ruler no other…

Does the word ‘independence’ has similar nuance in the Korean and American Declaration of Independence? The beginning passages of both the Korean and American self-reliant documents bluntly and directly evokes the conception of independence, relying on the divine providence of God and reverence to the mankind. In addition to anaphora and parallelism, stylistic devices of certain words, emphasis and listings paired with similar grammatical structures are employed to denounce their second tier international status. However, though they both profess their sovereign rights, the connotations of ‘independence’ demonstrated in the Korean and American Declaration of Independence are subtly differentiable. Supported by historical…

For this piece it was this news… Around 2000 North and South Korean governments agreed to resume family reunions. There were about over one hundred thousand families that were displaced during the war because the 38ºth parallel division was only supposed to be temporary and never meant to become a border. Before that, many people went back and forth between the North and South and when the war broke out and it became somewhat permanent many left their families, husbands or wives to go by themselves over to South Korea —that was it, they never saw each other again for 56 years, ever since 1953. Afterwards, out of these hundred thousand families, three hundred could hold family reunions at the parallel. The way the government found to select the families that were to be reunited was by holding a lottery, because they obviously couldn’t accommodate all the people. Older people had priority, because they didn’t have as many years to be reunited with their families. I was in Korea in 2001 but I had actually heard about this before: a few elderly people, mostly men, who didn’t get selected by lottery, committed suicide. I assume it was just too much. They just couldn’t go on anymore. This particular story really moved me… I didn’t necessarily always wondered what I could do about this but it was one of those things in the back of my mind. After I finished Ssitkim, which was a difficult project, because it took four years and there were all these war…

Don’t get me wrong, I was young, i was unorganised, im most of the time logically incorrect, clarity wasn’t there, and accuracy as well, but nonetheless all of my questions was answered, surprisingly only answered by one sentence, and that is the quotation “nasa Diyos and awa, nasa tao and gawa”. After a few months of defending her, supporting her and the government, she was only given a longer period of time, she was spared, from originally being executed at october, 2010, to being executed at April 29th of the year 2015. I remembered being so sad and devastated with the outcome of my efforts, because she was only spared not saved but seeing her family members in relief, I was shocked, for I didn’t know why they were happy, but hen I found out, it was because she her sisters and brothers and her mother could still live life a little longer with her. I saw their strong sense of love within their family and I also saw the happiness of people who helped make her, Mary jane, experience love from…
