Jesus as the Son of God. Jesus presented and declared himself as the Son of God using the seven I am statements. They are:
1. I am the bread of life (John 6:35)
2. I am the light of the world (John 8:12)
3. I am the door of the sheep (John 10:7, 9)
4. I am the Good Shepherd (John 10:11, 14)
5. I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)
6 I am the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6)
7. I am the true vine (John 15:1, 5)
In this seven signs or miracles, Jesus defined himself as the true Son of God.
In Old Testament, it was claimed that the” I Am Statements” was used 154 times to reveal who God really is. As stated in Malachi 3:6 God is revealing to us the identity of himself.
The story of Old Testament mentioned that the name of God in Old Testament as Jehovah.
As per read, God is identifying himself in the Old Testament deity for people to see that he is the True Living God. It was then emphasized in the book of John in chapter 1 versus 5. Out of all the claims that Jesus has made, Jesus has claimed in a statement saying that before Abraham He was, and this relates to the story of the burning bush incident with Moses (Exodus 3:13). The other statements that he has made were in the book of Isaiah (Isaiah 43:25, 51:12. Isaiah, 43:25 states “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.” And from the chapter 51:12 states ;“I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass”.
Despite the Old Testament, John the fourth author of New Testament has written his book with the seven great” I Am Statement” which was believed to be spoken by Jesus. The seven "I Am Statements addresses in the good news of John follows the miracles done by Jesus presented the major significance of his identity, deity and his death and resurrection. Hence, it was used by Jesus in the conversation with Thomas and used when he and the disciple were out fishing when the storm approached
them.
However, the Seven I am Statements has great influence in the portrait of Jesus. The seven signs or miracles used by Jesus to refer to himself.
First, “I am the bread of life” (6:35) influence the portrait of Jesus in such a way to reveal himself as the spiritual food which much more indicates that we have to take his teachings and lifestyle in order to have everlasting and eternal life with God. Jesus made that statement in the feeding of the Multitude.
It simply means if we have this spiritual food we will never be hungry or thirsty.
Second, Jesus said” I am the light of this world” is the other statement that Jesus uses to describe himself. This statement indicates that people must not live a sinful life on earth which he refers to as darkness. The light refers to him. If we follow him, we will bring the life to us which has power and blessing of the lord almighty.
Next, “I am the door of the sheep” (John 10:7-9). The statement refers to Jesus as the one who can protect the people. The salvation is through Jesus then to the father. Believers will go through Jesus than to the throne of the father. There is no other way then Jesus. No one has the power to enter the door to spoil the sheep, unless through him
Fourthly, Jesus says “I am the good shepherd” (10:11-14) identify Jesus himself as the Messiah that can look after his people and the believers in their everyday life and in times of trouble. In some of the books of Old Testament such as Ezekiel and Zechariah tells us story of how God has rebuked wicked shepherds. This particular “I Am Statement” clearly shows the way in which Jesus identified himself as the one who will protect us with care and love of his father, God the Almighty
Fifthly, Jesus said” I am the resurrection and the life” ” (11:25) is to indicate that he is only the one that gives internal life to the one who dies and to the one who is mentally, emotionally and physically dead. “I am the way, the truth and the life clearly shows that there is no other way to the lord; Jesus is the only way to the father. To receive the resurrection and the life, we have to believe in Jesus.
Next, Jesus said, “I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (14:6). Jesus states this to reveal himself as the incarnate Son of God. Those who believe in him will have eternal life. The truth lies in him that makes him the source of salvation and eternal life, whoever has faith in him will perish eternally. Titus chapter 1 verse 2 talks about the truth, and Jesus is the only truth.
Finally, Jesus said, “I am the true wine” (15:1) mentioned by Jesus refers to the lord as the wine and we are the branches. We are connected with him, so the father glorifies us. As seen in the Old Testament, the vine represents the chosen people of God, the Israelites (Isaiah 5). However, from this verse the people rejected Jesus, and only believers of him become the branches. Hence, we must be connected with Jesus in order to bear fruit; the fruit will be the source for us to be glorified by the heavenly father.
On the other hand, Jesus also uses the other seven signs or miracles accompanied with the seven great “I Am Statements” to show his identity. The miracles made by Jesus fully recognize Jesus as the true living God. The seven signs and miracles are:
1. Changing water into wine at Cana (John 2:1-11) (“The first sign”)
2. Healing of the royal son’s at Capernaum. (John 4:46-54)
3. Healing of the paralytic at Bethesda (John 5:1-15)
4. Feeding of the multitude (John 6:5-14)
5. Jesus walks on the water (John 6:16-24)
6. Healing of the blind man (John 9:1-7)
7. The raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45)
The seven signs or miracles presented in the gospel of John are the Miracles performed by Jesus, in which his identity of was revealed. Through this signs, the people turn to believe in his divinity.
To conclude, John the fourth author of the New Testament describes the seven “I Am Statements” to describe the identity of Jesus as the true divinity. The Old Testament is the background of the “I Am Statements” in which confirms the Jehovah as the true God. In the Old Testament there are some stories that identified who God really is, as it in the story of Moses and Abraham. The “I Am Statements” was used 154 times in the Old Testament.
The New Testament has the greatest seven “I Am Statements. “These statements were made by Jesus himself. John, as the witness to Jesus wrote on behalf of Jesus to persuade the people to believe Jesus as the divine power and trinity. These seven statements declared the portrait of Jesus. In the New Testament the “I Am Statements” was used by John twenty-three (23) times. The statements were used as an identity of Jesus. The statements were used many times as Jesus moves from one place to another.
To sum up, the influence of the portrait of Jesus is a plan from the divine God. God is a supernatural being. He sent Jesus to show people that there is a living God that has power and authority over his people. The miracles and signs accompanied by the seven “I Am Statements “has the greatest impacts on people lives to become his followers. Finally, Jesus set a personal example to act as the father or a leader to his disciple. This personal example was set by the father. He uses his influence to educate the disciples. The education given to the disciple was from his father to him, then to the disciples.
