I have made this decision based on several factors, the first being that a career in the medical field means I will be able to help people and make a difference in their lives. One of my uncle’s lost his left leg to diabetes …show more content…
and lived for years using a wheelchair until he was able to get a prosthetic leg. Almost immediately, he seemed happier to have regained some of his independence back. Seeing this, made me realize that I wanted to help people and help change their lives for the better.
While it is important to love what you do, I cannot deny that some of the appeal of becoming a prosthetic practitioner is the money. “According to a study, the average starting salary in Texas is roughly $40,000. With experience, the salary could increase to over $100,000.”
Hopefully, with this financial stability, I will be able to help my family with money problems and in a way, thank my parents for all they have done for me.
This pathway to this career is also incredibly challenging but also very rewarding. I will have to go to school for eight years to earn my master’s degree. After graduating, I must have experience in order to get a good paying job. I understand that all of this is going to require a rigorous amount of work and dedication but nothing truly worth doing should be easy.
Most people my age dream of leaving home and starting their own lives, including myself. After getting my associates degree at Amarillo College, I plan to transfer to Baylor University. Baylor offers an orthotics and prosthetics degree program, one of two schools in Texas to offer this degree. I want to move and get to know a new city and meet new people, but I also want to stay in Texas to be closer to family. Baylor is far enough away that I feel like I could be independent and learn to live on my own but close enough that I can still visit my family, all while allowing me to achieve my dream career.
Becoming a prosthetic practitioner is a long and difficult road but being able to help people is something I know will be fulfilling and worth it in the
end.
