Igloo's Last Letter To Oedipus
I am apologetic I have not written to you sooner but my current situation gives me limited access to pen and paper. The story I am about to tell you is one that is even hard for me to believe! After finishing my last letter to you and departing from the ship, I began my march towards death with no direction or care. I pushed on for what felt like hours before I finally succumbed to the cold and laid down on the sled, waiting for death to come. I could feel myself slipping into a deep sleep and my eyes began to close, the next thing I remember is waking up in an igloo of sorts with a fire raging! It was at that moment that the monster came in! I was sure that he had taken me in so that he could feed on me for sustenance. I backed up away from him and grabbed a …show more content…
I will not be your next meal” I screamed. I looked down the shaft of the spear and saw it was covered in blood almost all the way up to my hands. The only reaction on the monster's face was one of slight annoyance. “I would not have nursed you back to health just to eat you” he replied. After I put down the spear he told me of how he has been living in this igloo since he escaped from the ship’s cabin. He could not bring himself to end his life so he instead decided to stay in this remote region far from any humans and suffer the brutal weather as retribution for his actions. He took the spear from my hands and threw it across the igloo. “I have been living here for many weeks and if you wish to join me, I believe we can live together peacefully. It will not be luxurious but you will have food and be warm” He said. I weighed my options in my head and realized I had no options, so I agreed. This Conversation happened almost a month ago and since then we have been living together. The monster has taught me how to hunt and fish in these remote parts and in return I tell him anything I can. The monster has traveled the world but he is still curious and I impart on him any knowledge I

You could almost hear the souls of my fellow men screaming for mercy as the beast devoured every scrap of their bodies. He went through man by man by man in a matter of minutes with the most utterly disgusting noise of horrible manners. A tragic hero is defined as “a [great] man who is neither a paragon of virtue and justice nor undergoes the change to misfortune through any real badness or wickedness but because of some mistake” (“Aristotle”, n.d.). Therefore, a tragic hero has some sort of tragedy that surrounds their life. A tragic hero also makes dramas more interesting and makes readers think. Dramas sometimes either exemplify or refute Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero. Oedipus by Sophocles exemplifies Aristotle’s definition in four different aspects. The first aspect involves both Oedipus’ ignorance and knowledge of his life situations, the second involves his hamartia, the third involves the actual plot itself, and the fourth involves the characterization of…

As I leapt from the window of the dreaded vessel, I vowed I would never be privileged to see the sun as it rose anew. I thought of the past. I pictured my creator and I admired the picture of my fated self-destruction. Death did not scare me. How could it possibly when I already embodied the anatomy of a corpse so fully? Yes, this would be enough for me. To expire upon the diamond plains with the northern waves buried below me was the moonlit future I longed most for. My life had been altogether exhausted of breath and I, its humble advocate, was thoroughly depleted of any remaining will to gratify its pleas of invitation into the world that had so quickly recoiled from my hideous stature. This was to be how it ended. I had now outlasted the only identity that had ever attended to my entity at all. How could one conceivably carry on their everyday occupations without a single remaining acquaintance in the uncut span of the world? I longed for animation’s kiss of farewell as I departed forever from the hatred and confinement of this world. I advanced upwards along an icecap I had recently encountered as I continued my journey into death’s grip of acceptance. I knew full well I would not be missed. Not a soul among me had even granted me the gift or humanity of identity. I walked, nameless, among the masses of earth’s vast expanses. I was unknown, unneeded, and utterly and undeniably alone. As I neared my final resting place, a thought passed through me: What if instead of ended my existence in darkness and solitude, I exerted forth a flame to carry me on past this life? And thus was decided my fate would be that of eternal fire, for darkness was all I had ever been entreated to know of. Reaching the apex of the mountain, I removed my flint and steel from my right waistcoat pocket and struck the two together with such force that I did not know if the rocks would remain intact to themselves. When no spark ignited, I grew impatient and enraged. I must be the only being…

A mere twenty minutes later, I was exhausted. The sun had burst through the clouds and was basking the mountainside in violent light. I was roasting in the safety of my outer shell. As my once confident steps became desperate shuffles, I began to understand that my end was near. But I had a goal to achieve, and so I fought to deny what I knew to be true. Soon, I fell back and separated from the group. It was then that the guide made his move. He swooped down on me, looked me in the eye, and told me it was…

He’s-“ The creature yelled, and midsentence it just vanished. After that, I began to notice strange shapes coming into view in the distance, and I realized that I was now standing on what appeared to be the roof of a high-rise in the middle of an unfamiliar city. I looked over the edge of the building, and once again I couldn’t tell if there was any end. As I stood there trying to find my bearings, I was shaken from my thoughts by the sound of clanking metal. I turned to find the source of the noise, and saw a metal cage. In the middle of the cage sat a ragged looking man with manacles on his wrists and ankles chaining him to the floor of the cage. His clothes, if one could call those rags clothes, were tattered and torn. He appeared extremely malnourished, every curve of his ribs showing just beneath the skin. His hair was dark, and matted with filth, and his face was gaunt and sickly. In stark contrast to his appearance were his eyes. He looked close to death, but his bright emerald green eyes still seemed to be full of life, and they looked strangely familiar.…

The orange creature swiftly creeps into the room to the right and retrieves a sharp pointed object. It glimmers in the moonlight. He disappears back into the room and stumbles in, clutching a bowl of fresh, clear water. He clumsily slams the bowl of water on the floor beside my holding cell. A sharp scraping sound pierces my ears as the orange creature begins to dissect the mesh from the window beside my cell. He nods in satisfaction when he finishes. Then, he circuits back to the other side of the room. In an instant, the creature is airborne, soaring high above my cell and into the window, shattering the glass. I hear the pale creature croak “what the…..” from above and I know my time is coming soon. The pale creature quickly bounds down the stairs and rounds the corner to the window. His hairy, giant, bare stomach presses against my cage as it struggles to see what caused the broken window. I know this is my only shot, so I lunge. I heave my cage over the edge of the table, slamming against the pale creature. It whines in pain. At the last second, I heave a hefty breath and leap. I taste the icy air surrounding me. Somehow, I land with a certain grace I never knew I possessed in the bowl. The pale creature clutches its stomach and deflates in pain. The orange creature reappears from the outside and plucks my bowl in its mouth. He scuttles out the window to…

The journeys we as humans take over our lifetimes are all a matter of choices. As we age, our daily decisions shape the overall outcome of our collective destinies. Gathering our personal views, our beliefs, and our general knowledge of what is right and wrong gives us the ability to form the decisions that shape our destinies and the fates of the people around us. This is a choice that we take for granted, but a choice that Oedipus was never permitted to make for himself. Apollo prognosticated Oedipus’ fate and imparted this knowledge by the time of his conception. It is this prophecy that is the beginning and the end of Oedipus and his undoing. Oedipus’ journey for the identity of self and determination to change his fate is plagued and twisted and the consequences of the outcome agonizing.…

Oedipus was born of King Lauis and Queen Jocasta, the rulers of Thebes. They were warned by an oracle, that Oedipus, their soon-to-be-son, would grow up, kill his father, and marry his mother.
