The White Paper I choose to read was titled Seven Leadership Leverage Points for organization-Level Improvement in Health Care second edition. It was written by three authors James L. Reinertsen, MD: Senior Fellow, IHI; President, The Reinertsen Group Maureen Bisognano: Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, IHI Michael D. Pugh: President and CEO, Verisma Systems, Inc.
This paper talks about the importance of leadership in the health care field and the pressure they are under to always preform at their best and always improving the care they give and the services they provide. The Pressure can be hard to deal with but the fact is when you choose the medical field you are choosing to care for human life. Human life is precious and we must do all we can do to be the type of leaders that help our teams to be aware of everything they are doing, and always be striving to become better as individuals and as healthcare providers.
The authors in this article build a framework to becoming a great leader. There are 5 steps in this framework. The first step is setting direction by creating a mission, vision and developing a strategy. The next step is establishing a foundation. This step is important because without a foundation everything will fall apart. Building will comes next. It is important to encourage the team you are building up so that everybody is on board and willing to work hard to make sure leadership and change is effective. Next is generating ideas, once you have your team and everybody is working together you can come with ideas of what needs to be changed and how to do it. Executing change by spreading the ideas, and sustaining improved levels of performances. This framework helps with leadership and improvement.
The article then address the 7 leadership leverage points they were developed to answer the questions about how and where they could start and what highly effective things should they start
