The company that I will be speaking of is my current employer Grand Canyon University. My official position is Director of Performance Athletics and the Recreation Center. My main function is to lead the training of the 22 intercollegiate athletic teams. We will be entering our first year as a Division 1 athletic program. In my four years one of the main goals were to move to a division 1 level. My team and I help the university capture 2 back to back Learfield Cups which is awarded to the top overall athletic program in Division 2. I am proud of our team and how God has used me to lead and direct them. The second part of my position
is to oversee the operation of the Recreation Center which houses a student fitness center, aerobics room called “The Sanctuary” which holds up to 30 classes a day during the school year. Our facility is unique to other college recreation centers. At most Division 1 schools there are separate facilities for students and athletes. Our facility is for both student athletes and the general GCU community. The other interesting piece is my wife Noemi is the student recreation center manager. For years Noemi and I have worked together not only raising three beautiful boys but also co-founding Champions Training Center where we owned two performance and adult fitness facilities. When taking the position at GCU at the time the recreation center had not opened and I proposed that we bring the blend of athlete and adult fitness together at GCU and now going on my fifth and Noemi’s fourth we are intimately involved in the recreation facility expansions throughout the growth at GCU. Before I moved to Arizona in 2002, I was a Corporate Wellness Manager in New Jersey, I experienced the benefits of implementing health and wellness initiatives such as health fairs, fitness competitions, collaboration with health care providers, and conducting research on the benefits of corporate wellness. When coming to GCU in 2009 I could see that the university was going to grow and with more students there would be more staff and faculty. These individuals are the life blood of the university. The human asset is the most important element to a companies success or failure. In Jean de La Fontaine’s story of the “Goose who Laid the Golden Egg” It illustrates the importance of taking care of your people that are making your company function. It is easy to take people for granted however it is those companies that put people first experience less turn-over which results in highly efficient work enviornments where the energy of the people make the company a great place to work.
Being the best place to work take a number of benefits that focus on the employees growth. Many companies offer the basic such as; 401k plan, health benefits, paid vacation etc, these are the basics. When it comes to beating the competition benefits such as; on-sight child care, tuition reimbursement, paid certifications, stocks and profit sharing and what I will be speaking about in this paper is Corporate Wellness Programs.
