We are currently reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie and for our English class, we are required to create an Anthology. This project is connected to the book because each piece needs a theme that the book also contains. My Anthology is heavily centered around identity and how your identity is what you want it to be. I chose this theme because I could easily relate to the main character’s struggles between choosing his culture and choosing himself.

I talk about how there are so many assumptions that I have to face simply because of who I am. It made me realize that people will try to mold you to their standards and that you will have to choose between your standards or other people’s standards . In one of my journal entries, I mention about how my stepfather’s relatives automatically assumed racist stereotypes about me simply because of where I came from. This connects to the theme I chose because my race should not have to define who I am as a person. In one of my journal entries, I also mention about how my aunt has strict expectations towards girls compared to boys and how I need to be more lady-like. This example connects to the I picked because my gender has nothing to do with my personality and that people shouldn’t be defined by the gender stereotypes created by society or be forced to follow the gender norms created by society. I also talk about how my aunt has double standards for girls compared to boys. This connects to my theme because she identifies girls with several traits that some girls like me wouldn’t want to be identified
