Celebrating a quinceañera was not only about having a big party but also a tradition that helped shape me into the person I am today. To nearly all teenage girls what comes to mind when they think or hear about a quinceañera is the party. They imagine the dress, the limousine, the enormous reception hall and the dance. Problem is; that most eager birthday girls including myself, it takes the whole experience to really understand how symbolic and meaningful the celebration really is. Although it may simply be a big fifteenth birthday party to some girls but, for me it was an eye opening learning experience.…

Who would've thought that baking cupcakes could lead to learning so much about Mexican culture and history? At first, definitely not me. But now, I know so much more than I ever thought I would, about things like Quinceaneras and the Mexican Flag. I personally had always thought that a Quinceañera was basically a sweet sixteen, but there's a lot more to it. The tradition consists of the Quince, her chambelane (dancing partner/ date), 14 young girls called "Damas" and 14 young men to assist them (chambelanes). Though, nowadays it is more likely for the quince to have seven Damas and 7 chambelanes. The quince can also choose to have all Damas or all Chambelanes. The Damas usually wear the same color and style of dress to coordinate with the quince.…

Hello, my name is Lexie. I am about to turn 15 years old. This means I finally get to have my Quinceanera! You may be wondering, “What is a Quinceanera?”. A Quinceanera is a Hispanic tradition that celebrates a young girl’s coming of age. I may live in America, but my family is HIspanic. My dad is from South America, and my mom is from Mexico. I can’t wait to be able to celebrate my Hispanic heritage! Another question you may have is, “Why do Hispanics have a Quinceanera?”. The Quinceanera celebrates a young girl’s (Me!) and acknowledges her journey from childhood to womanhood. “What happens at a Quinceanera?’, you ask? Well, a Quinceanera has customs based on God, family, friends, food, dance, and music. The festivities welcome religious traditions, responsibility, and family virtues. The Quinceanera begins with a religious ceremony. Then, there is a reception held in the home of the family or a place where parties are usually held. During a reception, there is food, music, and there may even be a waltz or dance performed by the Quinceanera and her Court. The Court of Honor is a thing where the…

As a shy teenage girl with two left feet and a fear of dancing in public, I felt that dancing at a friend’s quinceanera as a member of her court of honor was going to be the worst experience of my life. After my mother gave me the news that she had volunteered me to be a dama de honor, I immediately complained about having to dance with a group of strangers for 5 months in preparation for the dance performance in front of about 200 people. For the first month I reluctantly attended every practice, and the most communication I had with the rest of the court members were a few mumbles once in a while. But as the day of the quinceanera approached, I became more comfortable with the other members of the court and even befriended some of them. I…

Although she is very skilled in her dancing, the language gap from Arabic to English excludes our choreographer as a skilled teacher. It’s one thing to be a world renowned Dabke performer than to actually be able to teach her knowledge. This is one of my most significant challenges because although I am not fluent in Arabic, I have a well understanding to be able to translate her broken English to the rest of our performers. By bridging the gap between the two ethnic cultures through Arabic to English translation, I overcame this challenge while providing a further explanation of dance steps to the performers. Conclusively, based off the reaction and enjoyment the audience had during our performance, it is unquestionable that I overcame this challenge. Not only do we relish performing, but so does the audience watching us perform Lebanon’s most cherished tradition.…

Following his move to Vienna, the pace of dance music composition increased, as on 7 December 1787 Mozart was appointed Royal and Imperial Chamber Composer for Emperor Joseph II. This post, though largely a sinecure,[3] had as its main duty the composition of dances for the balls held in the Redoutensälen (public ballrooms) of the Imperial Palace. Mozart complied with this requirement scrupulously, composing dances in great number.[1] He generally wrote dances each year between late December and early March;[4] this reflected the scheduling of the imperial balls,…

My most memorable experience would have to be the first time I stepped into a dance studio. I recall walking into an old musty room I could smell the sweat from afar. The dance teacher was repeating words that would forever stay with me for years to come. Five, six, seven, eight! The teacher stood in the center of the room clapping her delicate hands to the rhythm of the drum. As I stood there I was transformed. I started to perspire with excitement. I could see the dancers their faces full of intensity stomping to the rhythm of the drum. I knew at that moment that I was soon going to be part of that group. My body began to prepare itself for the intensity of my first class, that would forever be part of my life.…
