When she was 16 she took an Aptitude Test, which determines what faction fits your personality best. When Beatrice took the test she ended up getting 3 out of the 5 factions which means that she is a Divergent. Being a Divergent is very rare and dangerous. During the Choosing Ceremony Beatrice picks Dauntless (a faction focused on courage, bravery, and fearlessness.) as her new faction and when she changed factions she changed her name to a more Dauntless name so she picked Tris. Tobias Eaton- (Four): Tobias who is 18 was born into the faction Abnegation but changed to Dauntless. When he changed to Dauntless he changed his name to Four. While in the faction Dauntless his job was to oversee the dauntless initiates. He is also Tris’ boyfriend. During the attack many people were killed, including both of Tris’ parents and Will, who was a close friend of Tris. Will died while he was under simulation, Tris had to shoot him because he was trying to kill her and now the guilt of that is eating her alive. Tobias and Tris are trying to lay-low at the moment and they are trying to figure out what Jeanine is up to. They are staying in Amity (a faction focused on peacefulness, kindness, forgiveness, trust, self-sufficiency, and neutrality.) so they can stay safe from Jeanine and her Army. While she

The importance of being Divergent is first introduced to Beatrice after she completes her Aptitude Test (which determines which faction a person should choose). Tori (the test manager) reports to her: “’My conclusion,’ she explains, ‘is that you display equal aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. People who get this result are…’ She looks over her shoulder like she expects someone to appear behind her. ‘… are called … Divergent.’ She says the last word so quietly that I almost don’t hear it, and her tense, worried look returns. She walks around the side of the chair and leans in close to me. ‘Beatrice,’ she says, ‘under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone. This is very important.’” The manner in which Tori says that Tris is a Divergent means that it is an extremely rare condition that changes the way people look at them, and this is meant that Tris would have to create her identity alone. Likewise, as Tris possessed from both the Abnegation and the Dauntless (selflessness and bravery respectively), it was easier for her to create an identity accustomed towards the Dauntless; as explained by Four. After he and Tris exit the fear simulation room, he says: “’I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your…

Of all the Mirabel sisters, Minerva is by far the most confrontational. She has no fear and stands up to anyone, no matter what his or her position of power is. Often her rash actions are a hindrance to her purpose. Additionally, her purpose changes constantly, making it near impossible for people to control her. As Minerva changes from a loyal servant to a rebel, some things do not change. Minerva is highly confrontational and as a result will fight any fight, though the revolution is just a convenient one.…

In Veronica Roth’s Divergent, Tris has to make the most important decision of her life by choosing a new faction. Tris was born into a selfless faction, but she has a difficult time playing by their rules. On the other hand, she fits right into her new faction, and she enjoys the freedom that her old faction was not able to provide. Therefore, even though Tris hesitates about being in Dauntless, her lack of Abnegation qualities proves otherwise. This can be seen by looking at her lack of selflessness and her abundance of bravery.…

Minerva was a strong character in the Dominican Republic society. She was very interested in politics and women’s rights. Instead of getting married early and having children, she intended on going to law school and be more involved in politics. She was very motivated and she did not let anyone hold her back when she was aroused on something. She was not afraid to speak up to the public about Trujillo’s wrong doings. “ I want to go to the university” (Alvarez 98) and, “I’m not interested in admirers until I have my law degree” (Alvarez 99). Although Minerva was bold, independent, and stubborn at times, she wanted to stand up for what was right, and fix what was abominable. Minerva was the most independent out of the four sisters; she was a strong woman in the Dominican Republic…

The novel War of the Eagles by Eric Walters, is an excellent example of a Canadian novel and I strongly believe it should be nominated for the CBC Canada Reads award. The purpose of my writing is to persuade readers into reading War of the Eagles because the book is a must read for all Canadians in order to learn about the struggles immigrants faced in the old days. Many Canadians have little to no knowledge of the treatments of immigrants and thus continue to accept racism in today’s world. This is an important issue to address because it touches on racism and how it prevails in Canada.…

In Divergent by Veronica Roth, the protagonist is Tris Prior, the main character, and the antagonist is Jeanine Matthews, the Erudite Leader. Tris’s role in the story is to hide her divergence, an unknown secret and danger and to pass the Dauntless initiation to become a Dauntless member. As the story progresses, Tris along with Four must save their previous faction, Abnegation, and stop the Erudite and Dauntless revolt to overthrow and run the government. In Veronica Roth’s book, Divergent, Tris can be described as brave, selfless, and determined. First, Tris is brave. After all, the initiates may only enter the Dauntless compound by jumping into a hole where the bottom is unknown. Unlike the still initiates, Tris volunteers to be the first…

Tris Prior constantly analyzed the attributions of others and would philosophize about their meaning. Afterwards, she developed an instinct that allowed her to implement these traits into various scenarios. Unlike the majority, Tris Prior had a strong mind, will, and bravado. For instance, on page 405, the text states “’We’ve all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering our own. I don’t want to do that. I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest.’” This quote was created by Tris and another Divergent by the name of Four. The two of them were very open minded. As a result, they believed that it was unjust to confine people to one behavior for the rest of their lives. In addition, Tris mentioned how nobody cared for the factions that differentiated from their own because society made it a regulation to be loyal. Tris and Four illustrated the central idea since they opposed all the standards that the population followed. The Divergents exemplified that acquiring one personal characteristic would not be as beneficial when compared to an array of them. To add, the society was presented in a form that was extremely dull. The people of Chicago acted as if they were robots. The government was proud of this since they wanted a unified whole that would not rebel. This clearly portrays how the people were…

    Divergence In When Tris

Just like in the book when Tris realises that Divergent means nothing she thought it would be, she probably begins to feel more empowered. Without her Divergence, it means she is a fierce, intelligent, strong women by herself. She is who she is, and a stereotype created by the society isn’t going to be the reason why she is talented in her own, unique way. This connection helped me understand how much more empowered and strong Tris feels after she realises that her Divergence had nothing to do with the strength and intelligence she had in her. Due to this connection, I further understand Tris’s feelings and her new intentions that will begin to arise. For instance, Tris might feel like she is devastated at first knowing half her life was a lie, but then she will begin to stand up for who she is. She will begin to feel powerful and will start to make plans that will destroy these stereotypes that have been built in this society. Tris will not want anybody else to feel as if they are under someone else's control. She will feel that everyone should be allowed to believe in what they want to, and not follow what standards and stereotypes society…
