Upon completion of the vocational training the student and I will work together to obtain a successful employment outcome. This may require the student and me to do some role playing such as mock interviews. Role play may also be necessary to help the student feel comfortable in social situations they may encounter in the workplace.
The integrated approach I plan to incorporate into my counseling style will entail a variety of the techniques and process we discussed in our course.
Conclusion
My focus has been on building my integrated
approach around working with students to help in transitioning from school to work, but I believe that the same approach would work in helping any individual with a disability achieve their chosen vocational goal. A solid foundation must be built in order to have a structure that withstands. The early experiences I had in vocational rehabilitation laid the groundwork. The knowledge that I have gained through this course has helped me to build a solid foundation. In order to build a solid structure, it will be important to continue to gain knowledge, research theories, techniques and processes. I must keep an open mind and be willing to revise and build upon my counseling approach. It is important that I am willing to apply the theories and techniques I have learned to myself, be willing to open myself up to those I am assisting. I must also take responsibility for myself and explore my goals and be willing to change and adapt when necessary. As an effective counselor, I must understand the environment and cultural background of those I am helping. It is important that I view the world through the eyes of the person I am assisting to gain insight and some understanding of the struggles and challenges they face on a daily basis.
