1 Explain the advantages and disadvantages of Best Buy`s different employee programs using Maslow`s hierarchy of needs theory, reinforcement theory and expectancy theory.
Advantages
A. The company has always tried to create an environment in which employees, wherever they are, have numerous opportunities to learn, work, play and achieve. From the Maslow`s hierarchy of needs theory, the advantage of this employee program lies in that it tries to satisfy meet the needs of the higher layer of the people, such as safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs. In this case, this employee program provides their employee the conditions for meeting their own advanced needs and play a role of staff motivation.
B. Best Buy had always rewarded long hours and sacrifice. For instance, one manager used a plague to recognise the employee “who turns on the lights in the morning and turns them off at night”. From the perspective of reinforcement theory, under the reinforcement of this kind of reward employee would rather work for long hours and sacrifice.
C. Best Buy introduced its incentive plan in 2005, offering participants four choices with varying levels of performance payouts. From the point of expectancy theory, Best Buy`s employee incentive reform plan makes the personal efforts and performance link up with the reward of company. Employee will try hard to improve their own performance in order to get the reward and realize their personal goals.
