Are zoos prisons or sanctuaries? This is quite a controversial topic to discuss, mainly because everyone has a different point of view and opinion. Some people think zoos are bad, while some think they are good and help the animals. In this argumentative essay, I am against zoos – they cause more bad than good.
Forced killings of animals is one of the things they sometimes do in zoos. Keeping animals in a ‘prison’ is one thing, but killing them is crossing the line. One good example of this is the Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire, England who admitted to killing monkeys. They stated that (the monkeys) cost too much to continue feed the monkeys, so the animals were shot and just left to die.
Another type of mistreatment of animals is illegal substances that were made from these animals. Another example is the tiger bone wine (banned in 1993) that has been sold to the Chinese black market for several years.
From a person’s neutral point of view, zoos save endangered species and provide a safe, sound, enriching and better habitat for animals – sadly, the damage and harm it create are far worse. There are better solutions/alternatives, however. One of the examples are wildlife sanctuaries. They provide a natural environment for these species and do not lock up the animals like prisoners – instead, they roam freely like how they should be (like a sanctuary). They also provide biodiversity and protect them from harm.
Additionally, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the world’s leading animal rights organization, are against zoos. They have stated that there are a handful of cases where animals are locked and are given anti-depressants.
