The story Crazy Courage really caught my attention when we were assigned to read it. I knew right after I read it that I was going to write my essay over it. As I read this poem I was reminded of a time in High School, when there was a man who dressed like a women who lived right outside of town. Every time someone drove by his house they would say “I wonder what the he-she is doing today?” or “I’m passing the he-she’s house. I hated hearing these crude words coming from people every day. I believe that if you have the courage to stick up for what you believe in, then you deserve to walk with pride and confidence.
People judge people in everyday life. Everyone has judged someone before. Judgment is an evil thing. It causes hurt, sometimes in more than one person. After reading this poem and thinking about how many times I heard people judge this man; I felt awful for not telling anyone to stop being so judgmental. I would just laugh right along with everyone, because I thought it was the cool thing to do.
“The crazy courage to be whole, as a rose is whole, as a child is whole before they’re punished for including everything in their innocence.” (pg 196) In this quote is where I began to really think about people judging others. He was just compared to a rose being whole, he was whole by doing what he wanted, and not caring what others thought. This man had every right to do, wear, and say what he wanted, because he was a normal human just like everyone else.
Most did not understand what he was doing dressed as a woman, but they could see his dignity glowing. His dignity is so obvious, that even someone who is blind could see it. Also, “those who would kill him” would respect him for the courage he has shown. The ones that could see him showed much needed respect for him for standing up for what he believed in. zzzzz
The man that I knew had a lot of courage, just like the man in the story. He stood up
