Key Club Narrative
When you enter a new environment where you barely knew anyone, trying new things can be intimidating – especially when you’re a new freshman student. One particular day, there were various booths scattered outside the cafeteria as students were eating lunch. Our school offers a great variety of clubs and were showcasing them that day, so that students may sign up for them. One booth that particularly stood out was the booth for Key Club, which was operated by some members rocking some orange gear. As I read more about the club, I saw this as a perfect opportunity to meet people as well as contributing to my community. I immediately picked up the pen and signed my name on the sign-up sheet. This marked the start of a great year.

From Key Club, I’ve made fond memories and made new friends; I am extremely grateful that I met such an amazing community. One of my favorite memories was volunteering at

As a result, I had to seek help and joined a teen stress group in order to get back on my feet. What definitely helped me get through the tough times was being in Key Club and helping others. Seeing the smiles of those I helped or cheered on made me smile too. Interacting with people and socializing relieved a lot of stress and anxiety that drained me. Being surrounded by so much positivity and love made such a great impact on my life. One fond memory was when our group had to all fit in one tiny car in order to go to our water station, and we had to sit on each other (which was funny but was pretty awkward for everyone).

Overall, this year has been an emotional roller coaster and I’m glad to be a part of this family. The people I’ve met through service events and social events were so friendly and outgoing and helped me get out of my shell. I’ll definitely continue to be more active than I was this year! Thank you for such a memorable

Throughout my life, I experienced many events that would make most people unable to function socially, emotionally, or academically. These events include two divorces, five house relocations, and a transfer to a new high school during senior year. I consistently failed assignments and could not stay focused during class as my . Most teenagers would have given up here as the disappointment from both their parents and teachers would have destroyed their hopes for a successful future. However, this anguish became a catalyst for what would become a significant restructuring in both my demeanor towards schoolwork and my perspective on the future. Against all odds I was able to bounce back from the discouragement I had faced. I believe that this…

I could not get to this point in my life without the help of many people. So, first off I would like to thank all my family and friends who helped and participated in the service, especially those who have come a great distance to celebrate with me. Thank you to all my Hebrew school teachers especially Morah Sarah who had to deal with me for three years, lead the service Friday night and made my beautiful Tallis. Thank you to Rabbi Scolnic for his support, understanding and guidance. And a big shout out to Marcie (aka Marcielino), for not only being my Halftorah tutor but for being my friend and always having faith in me. (btw, stickle it, just a little bit) Thank you Aunt Leslie and Uncle Paul for searching high and low in Jerusalem to find me the perfect Jewish start necklace that I am wearing today! Thank you to Aunt Sharon for having patience and taking me dress shopping and allowing me to borrow these stunning shoes. Thank you to Marissa for being the best cousin and encouraging me to try on my party dress. Thank you to my Grandma for knitting me my Yalmukah…

Since I was a kid I’ve noticed my home town of Pomona, CA had areas that were roughed up. Whenever I passed through main streets like Holt Avenue I could see sidewalks filled with homeless people & damaged property. Seeing my city in bad shape sparked something in me & I knew I wanted help better the city & give back to it but wasn’t really sure how to contribute up until high school. Sophomore year in high school I joined Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán, MEChA, I was introduced into this club by a friend that was actively involved in it. MEChA’s main focus in the community was to help the Spanish speaking people within the community that were in need of help in school. Another club that I joined that year was Key Club International.…

Junior year was a big year for me. I switched schools, moved across the country to Palo Alto, California, and was living without my parents for the first time. I had to make friends all over again, and one of the ways I did that was by joining a Jewish youth group, NCSY. NCSY’s mission is to inspire Jewish teens by creating lots of events; some span for a weekend while others are for an hour weekly. One program in particular is called Latte and Learn where teens from the NCSY chapter go to a Starbucks for an hour, buy some drinks and learn a topic in Torah. Because my NCSY chapter consists of the large Northern California area, Latte and Learn has 2 locations so that members can go to the one that’s closer to them. With this still, the closest…

The topic of Physician Assisted Suicide has become a well-known issue. But the fact is, for terminally ill and for those that cannot recover, Physician assisted suicide is not completely misguided. It gives those who are in a lot of pain a chance to save their loved ones the torment of seeing them so feeble. It also strengthens the possibility of saving those who can still be saved.…

There is not a single feeling greater than the one you experience when you make a positive impact on someone else’s life. Thankfully, I was able to experience that in my junior year. My high school has a program called Link Crew that is designed to help alleviate the anxiety of freshmen’s transition in to high school. When I signed up to get involved, I never realized how strongly it would affect not only my life, but also the life of everyone else who came in contact with it one way or another. Junior year was my first year involved in the program. At first, I was not sure if I would be able to handle it because it was a club that required a large time commitment. I was already involved in my advisory board, student council, and also I had been on the varsity softball team for both years prior to my junior year, along with working anywhere from three to five days a week. It was a very busy time in my life for a while, but I soon came to realize that Link Crew was completely worth it once I started seeing the effect it had on my school.…

We were at Stringybark Creek looking for the Kelly gang. They were wanted for robbery and much more which was illegal. We were all wearing dark black boots and baggy clothes. The creek smelt like a junk yard! “Kennedy, Scanlon!” McIntyre yelled out that we were surrounded and should give up our weapons. What nonsense he was talking about? My buddy and I Scanlon just wanted to find the Kelly gang badly so they won’t hurt anyone else. We had already lost enough lives, so we just continued riding while eating juicy apples they tasted exactly like an apple pie.…

This summer will fly by and before we know it, our 2013-2014 school year will knock on the door and expect us to be prepared. In order to not be caught off guard, we should be ready for what the new year will hold out to us. An idea for next school year could be that we make the meetings more entertaining. Incoming freshmen will be curious as to what Key Club really is, and are more likely to join if they’re having fun while volunteering. Also, more social events should be planned such as a sport tournament or maybe even a night out playing laser-tag or meeting at a bowling alley.…

We were about a week away from my first meeting and I was freaking out but then I was also super happy. (Mixed Emotions) I asked everyone else in school who signed up. If they did, what club they were in and when their meeting was. I only knew one person who was in my club. We were really good friends. It was Sunday and we were heading to the meeting. My stomach felt like butterflies and I had no idea what was going to happen or what it was going to be like. We pulled in the parking lot and walked into the building in Bloomville. There were so many people in there and I only knew a few. I was so…

All throughout school I have participated in many clubs and organizations that have not only molded me as a person, but have helped me to develop responsibility, and leadership skills. Currently I am an active member of National Honor Society, and DECA. Both of these organizations, provided by my high school, encourage leadership, volunteer work, and have high expectations for behavior, and grades. Being in National Honor Society has shown me to continually do for others in need. There are always opportunities to get involved with the community, and even create drives for things like stuffed animals, and blankets for children who are sick in the hospital, and “Care Catties” for cancer patients, which include tissues, water bottles, hard candy, and lotion. DECA is another organization I am involved in at Frenship High School. DECA is a business organization for high school marketing students looking to learn, develop and compete in a competitive event. I have been a member since my sophomore…

Watching the younger kids was the hardest. They were so young and full of life, but they were stuck in a hospital room attached to IV’s and other monitors. For a little while it gave you a kind of hopeless feeling, because they were sick and there was nothing you could do to make them feel better. This is why the other teen volunteers and I were there for though. We played with the kids and made them smile and just listened if they wanted someone to talk to. One of my absolute favorite moments while volunteering was when you first walked into a room and saw a patient that you knew from last time they were in the hospital. The kids would get the biggest smile on their faces and want to tell you all about what they had been doing since the last time you saw them. The time spent at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital was definitely life changing. It let me bless kids in need, and also allowed the kids I was around to affect the way I think. It taught me to consider what struggles people may be going through instead of immediately judging or labeling them. Being a part of this program caused me to not only value my health and life, but also taught me that everyone has struggles in their life that can be…
