Kitzmiller Study
In the case of Kitzmiller versus Dover Area School District, the plaintiff Kitzmiller argued that the defendant, Dover Area School District, changed the curriculum of a biology course on the theory of evolution to intelligent design, which is a form of creationism. The defendants tried to deny that Intelligent Design a form of creationism but a form of true science. On the topic of scientific world view, further examination will take place on how science is democratic, how illegitimate forms of argumentation take place in this case and how intelligent design is a pseudoscience. Science is democratic and a scientist hypothesis can be tested by other scientists and try to be replicate the same findings, if there is not enough evidence to support the hypothesis then the validity of the hypothesis comes into question. One example would be fallacy of negation. Fallacy of negation is when argument A is false and if Argument A is false then it makes Argument B true. The book “Of Pandas and People,” claimed that due to the gaps in the fossil record, it must have been created by an intelligent designer. The defendants did not challenge the theory of evolution to see if it was true in regards to the fossil record. The statement from an expert witness on the case, paleontologist Kevin Padian, mentioned that the arguments in book about the fossil record are false. Another illegitimate form of argumentation would be arguments from ignorance. Arguments from ignorance is when a person thinks a theory is wrong because it cannot be explained. Dr. Behe coined the term irreducible complexity, and thought it was true since it could not be proven otherwise.     The use of rhetorical sentences helps get the reader thinking about the controversy between evolution and creationism. Dawkins and Coyne appeal to pathos as they set the tone of frustration and aggressiveness towards creationism. Creating this tone gets the reader more excited about the topic and more understanding to the author. Juxtaposition appeals to logos and allows the readers to understand why it would be illogical for creationism and evolution to be in the same category. It is much easier for the reader to compare evolution and creationism when two examples are given very close to each other. The authors’ appeal to logos is their most powerful tool in convincing their audience. They make many great points about why evolution should stand apart from intelligent design. Overall, Dawkins and Coyne were effective at persuading the audience in their favor. They appealed to ethos, pathos, and logos effectively causing the audience to be more invested into the argument and more likely to agree with them. These tools prepare the audience for their warning at the end of the essay about teaching controversies that are not really controversies.
