Donald Unger, who was honored Ig noble prize in medicine decided to conduct an experiment on himself, for 50 years he cracked his knuckle twice a day of his left hand and keep right hand as a control for 50 years (Mirsky, 2009). Moreover, after 50 years he compared his results, showed that there were no signs of arthritis in his left hand compared to his right (McCrory, 2003). This study is very well known for reason being, it was an extensive case study which revealed great deal of work claiming that there is no linkage between arthritis and knuckle cracking. Another study investigated habitual knuckle cracking to osteoarthrosis with hand functional impairment, 300 patients age of 45 or above (Castellanos & Axelrod, 1990). The data claimed that the patients who were habitual knuckle crackers were likely to increase their chances of hand swelling and lower grip strength however they did not find any relationship between osteoarthrosis and knuckle cracking (Castellanos & Axelrod, 1990). The data implied that there was dysfunctional of hand due to knuckle cracking however there wasn’t a direct correlational to suggest that it was solely caused by knuckle cracking. There could be many factors which could show the results which indicate that it causes hand swelling such as genetics and other environmental factors (i.e. food). Unlike this study, there was another
