LDO Reflection
When I first became an RA, I expected that I would be able to influence the lives of my residents, but I did not anticipate just how much the position would influence me personally. As a first year RA, I was passionate and dedicated to the RA role, but was also very nervous about making a mistake along the way. My lack of confidence was apparent in how my voice shook when confronting an incident, or when I would recruit another staff member to work with me on an LDO, rather than taking the initiative to host a program myself. At the start of this semester, I told myself I wanted to be different. I realized that in order to be the best version of myself for my residents, supervisors, and staff members, I needed to step up and develop the confidence …show more content…
Since community building is part of the RA position, I often forget that by fulfilling my job requirements, I am also having a significant impact on the lives of my 51 residents. This year, as I held one-on-one conversations with my residents, I found it overwhelming to hear over and over again how many of my residents expressed, unsolicited, that they felt safe, welcome, and as though they belong on the floor, because of the community that has been fostered through floor programs, my door always being open, and my genuine efforts to get to know each of my residents. Thinking back to my experience as a first-year student, I remember that I often craved an individual who I could trust and turn to if I were ever in need, and I feel as though I have been able to be that person for many of my residents this year. I make sure to check in with several of my residents every day so that the relationship foundations are present if a future situation were to arise. Additionally, I have focused on creating a welcoming environment, through opportunities like an inclusive language bulletin board. Leaving home for the first time can be difficult, and while many continue to face challenges, I feel as though I have significantly impacted my residents through my efforts to create an inclusive community and by serving as a positive role model and friendly

    3. At the beginning of employment staff, go on training like equality and diversity, this training teaches you the sort of attitude that is expected when working within the resident’s home, staff should also have the right attitude towards working with the residents, they shouldn’t be seen to be negative in anyway. I kept a supportive, yet claim face and nonverbal communication, and my tone of my voice was firm yet understanding. I had to place myself in the eyes of a 16-17 year old, and rather than judge Resident S and telling her to get over it, I realize that “relationships” can mean more when you are younger. I am more empathic now than my foundation year as well. My role is being the intern, and I am in a “limbo” role. I am not staff, but I am also not a resident either. An intern does not have to take on the supervisory role, but I have to remind the residents about rules and policies. I believe my role may have help when talking to the residents because they do not fear that they will get into trouble, but know I can still be there to be…

A residential advisor interacts with each and every resident on their hall, as well as holds the position of a role model for the residents. My interest in becoming a residential advisor stems from my desire to give students at Virginia Tech the best experience they can have, especially in their first years. By providing residents with my support, dedication, and care, I can accomplish this feat.…

One area that is people are recognizing is the knowledge and understanding of mental illness. Many people of all ages, especially in the college setting are dealing with mental illness. One in four young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 have a diagnosable mental illness. More than 25 percent of college students have been diagnosed or treated by a professional for a mental health condition within the past year according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI. Resident Advisors double as a resource as well as a friend, someone to talk to about what is going on and why. As an RA I would not be able to actually help people, but I can be that emotional support for anyone who needs it. At home, I have always been a person that people have gravitated to when things are bothering them. I have never completely understood why, but it has been a trait that I have grown to embrace about myself and help other people, as an RA I will be able to help various residents if they ever reach out and make sure that everyone knows of the resources available to them. One mental illness, especially effecting college freshman is test anxiety. More than 28% of students have high or moderately high test anxiety. Being able to control it more and relax because you know of your resources and your ability to talk to people helps students tremendously. Another issue currently facing many college freshman, although many would not admit to it, is homesickness. For many college is the first time away from home for long periods of time. Homesickness effects people differently, personally I have only had times when I get very homesick. One weekend that was especially rough was the weekend when my grandfather passed away, although I did not know him very well, I still felt like I needed to be home to support my family. As I have always tried to make myself that…

Ultimately, the unification and selflessness of community members contributes to the wellbeing of the community. The acts of the kind-hearted residents, as reflected in the University of Chicago, Give-A-Thon, the HAHS organization, and others, all alleviate human suffering that occurs on the local scale. With these acts of kindness in mind raises a question about the possibility of positive contributions in the community being only a small benefaction. Do the selfless acts cover up the human suffering that occurs in the community? Generous actions of residents may be seen as a “bandaid” or a cover up for the distress seen in the community. Human suffering such as poverty, isolation, and financial loss, is not represented the same as when selfless…

Over the summer of 2015, I volunteered at Harmony Hall in Bassett, Virginia. Harmony Hall is a nursing home for the elderly. I had heard about this agency during the last couple of months in my senior year in high school from my friend, Kanan Patel. She had volunteered during the winter of 2014 and she instantly fell in love with the mission, the staff, and the residents. When looking for a place to volunteer, I came to her for references, and she quickly directed me to Harmony Hall. I began working with this agency the following summer.…

residents? Is the staff properly trained to handle a medical condition in an emergency? How do you really know if the person is a good fit to work as a caregiver in this organization? Assistant living communities give the residents more freedom to do things verses being enclosed in one room as some nursing homes. I chose this organization because I had many relatives who were residing in assisted living facilities. Some of them were treated with respect and dignity and some were not. One family member complained to us when we would visit about the negative behavior and neglect of the caregivers towards them. I believe that this is an important healthcare…

Jodi-Recently I got promoted into a leadership position because of my high level of achievement and proficiency as an RN. Moreover, I am very social and have a moderate need for affiliation. Although, the clinical staff view me as a professional and competent, I have a reputation of being "chill" and "laid-back." A chill and laid-back persona make you overly familiar. I wish I were the task master! I wish the need for achievement has bumped me out of the graces of others. Nursing is a profession focused solely on patient care and being proficient at skills. Before, I did not have to manage productivity or worry about others. There was a danger in building the relationships in the way I did with humor, kindness, and likeability. Now, in my new…

During the second half of the semester I showed strengths by recognizing my own limits and seeking assistance/guidance, seeking out opportunities, reflecting on my own nursing practice and keeping open communication with my instructor and RN. During one of my shifts, I worked with client who wanted to change but was hooked up to a VAC. I recognized that I wasn’t educated on VACs, and was unsure as to whether I could unplug it so she could change. I sought out a RN and charge nurse to help me figure out how to do this. After being guided through the process of what to do, I was able to help the client change. I have also taken the opportunity to reflect on my own nursing practice through my RPN’s. My RPN’s have showed a thorough analysis of my feelings and questions that arise throughout my shifts. In addition, I always make sure to stay in touch with my client’s nurse and my instructor throughout my shift. I chart off at the end of each shift and give report to the nurse. I also took an opportunity to empty a Blake drain on a client who was not my own. I had the RN guide me through it, as it was my first time performing this task.…
