what I said not knowing what will happen next.
It was 4:45 in the afternoon a Saturday on March 25, 1911, my colleagues and I were just sitting in the lounge of the fire station. I had so many things in my mind how my wife Veronica and my kids Joe and Sophia were doing. The kids should be at school and Veronica should be at work at the Triangle Waist Factory. A few minutes later I hear my colleague Balpert screaming, “We have an emergency hurry.” I responded, “Ok calm down, everybody get ready.” We all hurried as fast as we could not knowing what the emergency could be, but knowing people might be in danger. Not until we start getting on the horse-drawn fire engine we know what happens. When Balpert finally calmed down he tells us “It's the Triangle Waist Factory it's on fire we need to hurry.”
We rushed to the Triangle Waist Factory with so many questions in our minds. And I ask myself is Veronica okay she should be working on the eighth floor. My colleague Polvin sitting next to me tells me “ Look Lario Boy you can see the smoke and fire from here it looks horrible.” In which I respond “Look you can see people screaming, reporters all over the area, and families in panic while the fire goes on.” We finally get there ready to respond, while my boss Jake screams orders like a maniac. When we finally understand Jake he tells us, “Half go up the stairs to the burning floors and half get the ladder and go through the window so it’s not that crowded in one spot.” We respond, “yes chef” and get to work. Since I was stuck with ladder duty I rush to help my friends Polvin and Balbert also on ladder duty. We start setting up the ladder and realized it does not reach the burning floors, so we tell our boss Jake. In which he orders us to “Go up the ladder always go as high you guys can go through that floors window and follow your fellow workers to the burning floors. We all respond, “Yes chief” and get to work. I start climbing the ladder when my friend Polvin close behind tells me “What's the matter with you Lario Boy you look distracted.” In which I tell him “It’s my wife she should be working on the eighth floor.” Which Polvin responds back “Well my wife Jessica is also working on the eighth floor.” We all stay silent and keep on going up the ladder. When we reach the sixth floor I see my wife Veronica climbing down the fire escape and I go into shock.
She sees me and starts running to me.
I scream out “Don't come, honey, you got to escape, the kids need their mother if I die I die with honor. When she gets to the window she blocks the way in and no matter what I do or say I can't convince her to move. She tells me and I quote “I love you, honey.” In which I respond “I love you too, but you got to escape or you will die.” In which she tells me “No unless you come with me.” “But you know I can’t abandon my job.” She takes a deep breath and tells me “Ok honey I love.” Before I can respond she gives me a deep kiss. In which then I realize a creaking sound and I realize the ladder is burning to dust, making it wobble. Before I know, I start falling at high speeds hearing the voices of my fellow workers and wife “No.” I hit the concrete ground hearing everybody scream in horror. I start seeing duckies and a light, but then I realize it’s the sun. My colleague Polvin who also fell down the ladder comes running towards me screaming, “Are you okay Lario Boy.” I respond I don't feel so good” in a mumbling voice. I remember closing my eyes and out of a sudden, I hear my wife Veronica's voice getting louder by the second like she was coming closer. Then I hear my wife tell Polvin “Is he okay.” In which Polvin responds “I’m sorry but he's dead.” I tried to say no I’m alive but I couldn't and the next thing I remember is ending up here in this place for the
dead.
I woke up feeling different like in a trance. Thinking I knew where I was but at the same time no. When I finally got my conscious back I remembered Veronica and my kids Joe and Sophie, but before I could scream their name I realize where I was sadly. The land of the dead with no return back.
