Lessons Learned Throughout High School
I ran track through my four years of high school, and during these four years, I've grown to the adult that I am today. With my teammates by my side, I've learned more and more lessons each year. These lessons guided me throughout high school, and will soon guide me in the real world.
Participating in a sport had led me to want more of myself and also wanting to Improve each time I stepped on the track. I would make goals for sports and later started making goals to improve academically.

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

An interest I am most proud of is my career in competitive gymnastics. When I first began gymnastics, I did it recreationally, but I soon fell in love with it and decided to compete. I am now into my fourth competition season. I have competed at meets all over California, and have practiced hundreds of hours. Gymnastics requires hard work and dedication, but it is worth it because I genuinely love the sport. The skills are amazing, and it is a well-rounded sport that requires grace, strength, and flexibility. I have sacrificed many hours for gymnastics, but I have gotten a lot from it in return. I have met one of my best friends at gymnastics and some of my coaches have become like family to me. I have also discovered a lot about myself. Doing…

“It was May 2016 at the state track meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama. I had just finished third in the 800-meter race. I left the track area, and Coach Kirby Patterson from UWA had approached me. She wanted me to come and visit UWA. I was excited because I knew I wanted to continue running track while in college, but I just did not know where. After visiting, I felt like it was the perfect place and opportunity for me to continue with my passion.”…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

For the past six years of my life, I ran for the Eureka Springs High School cross country team. After graduation, I was given the opportunity to run for the Golden Suns cross country team at Arkansas Tech University. In a matter of six months, my cross country experiences and habits were changed. Often times, there are similarities between two subjects such as these, but in this case, only the differences are obvious. There are changes in not only the way that I run, but the team I ran with, the coach I ran under, and the person I am when I run. These changes have caused me to see what I can do as a runner and a college student.…

I have been running since I started Modified Track and Field in the seventh grade. Running has been a part of my life ever since then. When I decided to join track I felt as though it was the worst mistake that I could have ever made, simply because i did not like running as a child. After trying it for the first year and not giving up I enjoyed it very much and that is when I stated that I would continue to run track till I graduated high school. Then came ninth grade and not only did I continue to do Outdoor Track but I also joined Indoor Track and it helped me improve with my running for Outdoor Track. I participated in Soccer from sixth grade till ninth grade, because come tenth grade I realized I had a strong passion for running,…

For my entire life, my life has revolved around school and sports. My parents have raised me my whole life to care about school first and everything else behind that. I have tried my whole life to get ahead in school and be a top notch student. Sports are easily the second most important thing in my life. I participate in three sports: football, wrestling, and baseball. I am busy with sports nearly all year, and still continue to take hard, higher level classes. Football has impacted my life more than any sport I participate in. Sports have shaped my life and the person I am today. There has been many things I have had to overcome in sports and my life in general.…

Throughout high school, my life has been consumed by sports. Being a student athlete has made me become the person I am today. Ever since I was sixteen, I have also worked at a daycare in town, TASK. This has showed me how much little kids look up to student athletes. Working at TASK has also showed me how much these little kids want to grow up and be like us student athletes. Without sports and working at the daycare, I would not be the role model I am today. Since working at the daycare, I have realized I want to be the person little girls are talking about when they say, “I want to grow up and be just like her.” Being chosen team captain has made me into the leader I am. I have learned how to push my teammates…

See, football is more of a mental sport than anything else, so running on the track wasn't only about getting in shape. We would push our minds by running as hard as we could even if we felt like we were going to pass out. At the beginning, I was immature and only thought of myself, sometimes even giving up when I was tired or hurting. Then after the third game I had a season-ending injury. Imagine working all summer and then only being able to play three games! I needed surgery on my arm and at least five months to recover.…

What I’ve learned in high school is that you have to try your hardest and to turn in all your work and if you miss school it could be difficult to catch back up with. I learned that if you slack even the slightest it will bring you down dramatically although it may get rough or hard you should always put your all into the work you do because if you do not show some effort theirs a high chance the teacher won’t think you are trying. I learned that in high school things become much more difficult as you move forward more homework more assignments in class more reading more learning more difficult task you have to deal with and the sucky part about it all is if you don’t understand something people look at you like your stupid it’s almost as if…

Working with my classmates has helped my writing and me in many ways. The peer editing comments help me know what to change in my writing. When I read and hear other classmate’s essays and journals it gives a lot of information that I didn’t even know. When peer editing, it helps me understand what people think about my writing and how they think I can make it better. The comments that are given to me by the editor tells me what to change. Also when you peer edit, the editor tells you what grammar or spelling mistake you have made, so you can change it. I believe that when you peer edit, it helps to make your writing that is the best. It also help you learn how to write better sentences and helps you see if the reader understands your point or you need to explain it in another way. When we peer edit multiple times, you get to know the opinion of more than one person on your writing. That helps me in many ways. First if the first editor missed a incorrect spelling, grammar or anything else the second editor most like will get it and if they don’t the third one might get it. Sometimes I peer edit my younger brother’s writing work and when he turns it in, and gets it graded, he barely has any mistakes. When a classmate is reading his/her essay or journal I feel like I am getting new information, and when I read to others I feel like I am giving the new information. Besides when we read our writing It helps me pay attention more in the class because the teacher is asking us questions about the reader’s writing. When the teacher is asking questions, it starts up your brain and puts it to work. My brain sometimes doesn’t feel like working in class but when the teacher ask questions my brain just wants to find out the answer and answer it. When my classmates read their journals, I sometimes, not always, get to know something more about them. Also when I read their journals or essay, I learn something from them, like new words, better ways of writing sentences and much…
