From our assigned readings this week, consider the case of Samir Moussa. After reading his story please share how his life illustrates both the tension between local culture and globalization, and the Opportunities afforded by globalization. Answer to question 1a (Tension between local culture and globalization)
Local culture advocates for every individual, state or nations to preserve their cultural identities, belief systems, values, languages, and many more cultural identification, while globalization says, all cultural barriers and identification must be pulled down, easy travels for all, more global interactions and integration …show more content…
America is spreading her political and economic models through the development of, “New global professions, pop culture, and the concept of one big homogeneous world culture known as global village,” (globalization 101, unit 6, p.8). These models have impacted cultures in the following ways;
1. The New Global profession: This is called global multiculturalism, is being propagated by the Americans, with 15 to 20 of its population as members of this highly skilled and educated elite. This phenomenon has increased significantly because of high number of people travelling the globe. It has brought varieties in cultural foods, cultural food monopoly has been broken. Having people who speaks different languages and culture has helped in diversification and expansion of our cultural trades, commodities and products.
Our cultural cities have been impacted, it has brought diversification to our local cities. We now have cities of many colours, for example in the city of Johannesburg in South Africa, you see people dressed in different cultural styles, speaking differently, looking …show more content…
The global village. This model has made it easy for all people and nations to be wired and connected together and are able to tune to one television channel like CNN, watch same movies, same news, etc. this model is changing, reforming, and annihilating the cultural values.
Question 3
Identify other cultural challenges that have arisen due to globalization.
Other cultural challenging includes
1. Challenges of how to protect cultural languages
2. Challenges of maintaining cultural political orders and unity.
3. Challenges on how to culturally define human rights.
4. Challenges of inability of cultural states or leaders to control their citizens.
5. Challenges of globalization and Islamic culture
6. Challenges of globalization and Asian values
7. Extinction of African traditional cultures.
8. Challenges about how cultures sees gender equality and women rights.
All these are the cultural challenges arising due to globalization.
