In Beethoven’s Symphony no. 5 in C minor the first movement is called Allergro con brio and it is in sonata form. This movement is very intense and strong sounding and has a single rhythmic motive that is short-short-short-long. The first theme of this movement is in C minor. Throughout this theme he shifts the motive to different pitches and instruments. The second theme is in E flat major and starts with a varied basic motive of short-short-short-long-long-long. The horns starts a new melody that is calm sounding compared to the opening of this movement. In this movement you can hear horns, some woodwind instruments and some string instruments. This movement has a dramatic climax and the closing section starts in C major and moves into C minor.…
In the year of 1803 Beethoven composed his Third Symphony considered to be his first Romantic song named Eroica. It is said he dedicated his song to a person he admired named Napoleon, but when he found out Napoleon crowned himself emperor, he re-titled his work in anger. The beginning of Symphony Number Three, Eroica starts off with an allegro tempo which has a dramatic entrance that states, “I am here.” As the song continues I hear the beautiful…
Beethoven’s 9th symphony conducted by Leonard Bernstein is a truly sophisticated piece of art that takes you through a roller coaster ride of mixed emotions. Feelings of sorrow and fear throughout the piece are coated with affirmation, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and then Beethoven continues onto exploding your emotions using sounds that bring feelings of extreme proudness and accomplishment. This end of the journey is a magnificent chorale using a modified version of Schilling’s poem Ode to Joy.…
This movement sounds like he was painting a beautiful picture. It has some kinds of romantic emotion, but Beethoven described it by a sorrowful way. Beethoven composed this movement use lots of sixteenth notes, from one part to others. The theme sixteenth notes were formed by A.F.E.D. This movement was totally different with the second movement, and makes a confrontation with the first movement. This also can give expression to Beethoven have a firm belief in the struggle for victory. However, this movement comes to an abrupt end. This makes people to reverie. There are still having hardships in the endeavor. Like the end of the Shakespeare’s Tempest, the protagonist subdued his foes. However, he let the past be forgotten, and forgave all of his foes. This also gave expression to the helpless of can’t triumph over the societal forces and limitations. This explained the ending of Beethoven’s tempest sonata and Shakespeare’s Tempest has some relevance.…
Born on December 16, 1770 and died on March 26, 1827 at age 57. Ludwig Van Beethoven was a composer during the classical era of music, but his compositions led to the end of that period and to the start of the romantic era. He helped greatly to develop tonal music. One of the amazing things about Beethoven was that he was deaf. At his last symphony, “Ninth Symphony”, he had to turn around and look at the audience to see if they were clapping. He was greatly influenced by the composers Haydn and Bach. He greatly influenced his music with the power of romanticism.…
To assign the first movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony the sonata form would truly be a subjective judgment. I will first explain how this movement fits thesonata form; then I will discuss how it diverges from this form in rather fascinating ways.…
Precious few works in the history of music have enjoyed so esteemed a place in the hearts and affections of so many – far fewer have rivaled the profound scope and monumental artistic achievement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s ninth and final symphony. This work, whose genesis was in many ways influenced by the course of then-recent human history would ultimately help shape and define the history of civilization itself, and in doing so become firmly rooted in the world’s shared cultural patrimony – the single most eloquent representation of the universal brotherhood of Man.…
They play the first movement, the Allegro, which is defined by a fast and lively tempo. Eugen’s violin notes are quick and sharp, forming part of the four notes starting the first movement. The melodramatic pauses leave the audience guessing where the sonata will lead. Melodies from the piano weave in and out of the violins gusto, blending with a natural flair only possible from a pair of well-practiced…
many different instruments being played in this piece. I predicted that it mostly consisted of string and brass instruments. After doing some research, I discovered that a flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, a timpani, and a few other string instruments were used. I think this particular variety of instruments made this piece sound really nice. It starts off with a slow tempo and gradually gets louder and faster. During the fast tempo, the string instruments were what really stood out to me. The flute also played a major role during the short pauses and the less active measures. I think this woodwind instrument is what really gave this symphony its calmness. In certain sections, it may feel rushed and rapid due to the sudden…
It goes from high to low and the opposite. This piece is also fast and it has more drums. The piece has more like of repeating the notes from high to low. One times its calm and smooth and another time it’s completely the opposite, which makes it unique. The second moment of the symphony has a similar style like the first one but with different notes. However, in this piece I hear more of clear violin than drums. In additional, the first moment I heard this piece I felt that I know it somehow, then I remembered the Disney cartoons when they used these kinds of music in their movies. Sometimes visual media could help your memorizing the song without paying attention to the song itself.…
Beethoven’s Leonore No. 2 overture also overture was composed in the sonata form like Leonore No. 1 overture, and Leonore No. 2 revised from Leonore No. 1 with new musical ideas. Even though Leonore No. 1 has large scale and heavy structure than the contemporary formal overtures, Beethoven’s Leonore No. 2 has larger scale and heavier structure than Leonore No. 1, and it was composed like independent symphonic work for concert. Further, Leonore No. 2 includes five hundred thirty measure with fifty-six measure for introduction. This overture has huge scale for theater music and it is larger than Leonore No. 1 and he contemporary formal overtures such as W. A. Mozart’s overtures. Moreover, Beethoven used the subject melody of the Florestan’s…

My listening selection that I chose from the classical era was ¬¬¬Mozart’s Symphony #40 in G Minor K 550. This piece was composed in 1788. The tempo of this piece is molto allegro and the rhythms are fairly simple. Syncopation is used in this piece as well with homophonic texture. The piece is mainly quite with development to a louder section in the middle, but ends softly. The exposition of the piece demonstrates the quietness that is seen, but contains a small louder section. The recapitulation is very similar to how the exposition is composed. The majority of the dynamic parts are sudden with very little build up to crescendos or diminuendos. There are… This is piece has been described by being a muted struggle against out of controllable…
In the first movement, the gradual opening expanded the listeners’ perception of musical space. From the second and third movement, the changed ordering and exceptional length exhibits the potential complexity of the symphony. In the finale, the inclusion of human voices drastically changed the expectations of the symphony. Nonetheless, the Ninth follows the general form of symphonies and is an extraordinary example of a symphony that pushes past boundaries. Not only did Beethoven’s last symphony represent the approach of the end of his life and musical growth, but the Ninth also represented a high point for the symphony as many others could not surpass…
The original piece was dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte. At the time, there were a lot invasions and Paris had declared war on Austria on April 20, 1792. Five days later, once Robespierre was executed, disorder remained over Austria. Paris was not sure how to acquire more money to finance the war. The general hired Napoleon Bonaparte to lead the "Army of Italy". Beethoven was excited and used the symphony to express his thoughts about bravery and admiration for the French Revolution and Napoleon Bonaparte.…
